The alternator grounds the light to make it come on. 99% of the time when a bad alternator is changed out, and it still won't charge, you didn't disconnect the battery in time, and a wire accidentally touched something and blew a fuse. I would get inside the underhood fuse box and check all the fuses. I think there is a regulator fuse, and also a very large maxi fuse for the alternator.
