Upgraded from AM/FM to AM/FM/CD need help!

Hey guys, first post

I have a 2008 V-10 F-250 SD company truck. It came with the AM/FM 2 speaker system. I found a AM/FM/CD mp3 head unit and installed it and it plays well considering I have only 2 front speakers. I checked the rear speaker ports and found they were pre-wired for speakers so I got a set of OEM speakers and plugged them in. I set the head unit to play front and rear and then rear only but still am getting no sound from the rear speakers. It appears the speaker wires were never terminated to the radio plug and I don't see any laying around in the dash. It seems if Ford would go to the trouble to run the wires to the rear speakers they would have been terminated at the radio plug. Evidently, this is not the case.

Does anyone know where I should look for the dash end of the rear speaker wiring harness? I would really like to get the rear speakers working.

Thanks, in advance for any and all replies!

Welcome.

I would look at the kick panels. Ford puts a lot of connectors behind the trim there and you can usually find speaker wires in there. It's possible they aren't plugged in, but its equally possible that your missing the harness for the radio to kick panel.

This is for a F350, but it should be very similar.

Thanks for the info. I had this same schematic and verified the rear speaker wires colors matched. I'll probably need to pull the radio again and look but it appeared the wires never made it as far as the radio plug.

If they are the same color all the way back, I would start at the pass kick panel. See if you can find the wires there.

I found the right rear speaker wires end at a plug behind the front passenger kick panel so I assume it's tha same way on the drivers side. If I could find the pins for the plugs and knew which terminals on the back of the radio to use I'd be in business.

Anyone know which terminals on the rear of the radio are for the L&R rear speakers?

Anyone know if the pins are available for purchase?

Unless your absolutely trying to stay OEM all the way...

It maybe less of a headache to use off-the-shelf components. If you have access to a Delphi-Packard type (barrel) or a "Weatherpak" crimper it maybe worthwhile.

There are a few sites that offer "universal-use" hoods and pins for individual consumer purchase.

Waytek wire was one... http://order.waytekwire.com/scategor...%20CONNECTORS/
Here you could use a 2-pin Amp, Delphi and or Molex.

Here's another one.... http://www.sherco-auto.com/cg.htm

Metra and Schosche should also carry the male and female speaker termination ends (I know Metra did last year). So they might be another option. The pigtail ends usually run about 4-6bux ea. I had a listing somewhere of OEM speaker components from these people-I'll look when I can.

Motorcraft also carries some of the pigtail ends...
Do you by chance see a number on the existing plugs that are behind your kick-panels?

Thanks for the links and info. from a fellow Carolinian. Being it's a new company owned truck I prefer to try not butcher the wires and keep it clean. I was thinking if I could get some pin connectors (thanks for the links) and determine which pins on the back of the radio I need to connect to I'm good to go.

I'll pull the radio and check the plug at the kick panel(s) for any ID numbers.

Again, thanks for taking the time to try to help me out.

Any Updates?

I need to perform the same swap - any tips on dash removal, radio install, running speaker wires/mounting rear speakers, etc., on my '08 F250.

Thanks

texan2004 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
You guys can go to the Autozone website, register, then access wring diagrams for these trucks. Might be real helpful. They had them for my 2003 SD when I was looking for the wriing details on my overhead console. If you read the connector numbers off of the wiring diagram then go to the connecotr diagram for that plug, you should be able to fugure out everything you need.

Pulling the radio is a ten minute task, if that long.... Pop out the panel on the lower left (cig. lighter) and the blank panel on the lower right. Remove the screws (6mm head) from each side and pull slightly on each side and the bottom will unsnap. What I did was pulled out enough to get my hand under the panel one at a time on each side about midway up and pulled out on the top while using my hand under the panel about midway as a pivot point. You don't have to disconnect the cig. lighter, trailer brake wires or anything. there is enough slack in the wires for the panel to lay back out of the way with plenty of room to remove the 4 screws in the radio and pulling it out.

The hardest part will be getting the connector pins. Once you get them install them in the plug to the radio as follows:
pin #9- left rear positive- white/green
pin #10- right rear positive- brown/white
pin #22- left rear negative- brown/yellow
pin #23- right rear negative- brown/blue

http://www.sherco-auto.com/cg.htm

CG11
20-18 ga

Female Terminal

The speaker harness on my truck only went as far as the kick panel on the passenger side and terminated at a big plug. I tapped in the speaker wire harness under the scuff panel on each side using tap-n-go plugs.

You'll have to get some retaining nuts to mount the speakers. I took the seat belt bolt out and pulled the panel back out of the way on each side to ease the speaker installation.

From start to finish it took about and hour in all to go from a 2 speaker system to a 4 speaker system and it was worth the effort.

If you need a radio let me know. I might still be able to get an AM-FM-CD-MP3 player for less than $150 or an AM-FM- 6 disc CD-MP3 for $200 and a pair of OEM speakers for about $30 if your interested.

I can fax a picture of the radio plug identifying the pin locations if you want. I just need a fax number.

Good luck!

Thanks a million for taking the time to provide a detailed response!

This will make my job much easier. I'm sure this thread will get plenty of time in searches also, it seems like a no-brainer upgrade for XL owners!

I am interested in the rear OEM speakers, or if you could recommend a good after market set (?), I think they may be an odd size (not normal 6"x9").

Thanks again, Mark

2k,

I just installed upgraded from AM/FM to AM/FM/CD/MP3 in my '09. Everything works fine except when I turn on my headlights. The backlights on the radio blink. I'm guessing I need to have the unit programmed (coded) by the dealer? Did you have any similar issues?

Thanks.

I didn't have any problems. I bought three of these units, one for me and two for some guys at work and each one of them worked fine.

Turns out the difference is that the stereo I installed was brand-new, never installed. I talked to a tech and he said if it was a take-out there would be no need to re-program. I wish I'd bought a used unit now. I have an appointment to see the dealer on Thursday.
