Comp. won't come on?

1993 3.0 ltr shorty Aerostar. I checked the 20 amp fuse-good
I noticed the 2 wired low press switch had bare wire exposed-changed it-no power
Switch might be bad so I put clip in connector to bypass-still nothing
I could see the compressor-clutch won't engage to accept freon

What do you think the problem is? Large fuses were changed on drivers fender behind battery-still nothing
Could it be as easy as the clutch being changed and the system coming to life?
Any help would be appreciated-Boz

Forgot to add. Bought the van-sight unseen 3 months ago so I don't know what caused the air not to work or how long it has been since it has worked. I just read about clutch removal on here. Any ideas?--Thanx Boz

you need to get a 12v test lite and probe the wires going to the clutch and see if you are getting power to the clutch if not then its proberly the pressure switch is bad or it has loose wires ,,,, if your getting power to the clutch then its not engaging properly,,, try takin a small hammer and tap the front of the clutch while the unit is on and engine running if it engages then the clutch needs to be adjusted.....

There is also a relay behind the battery that controls the AC clutch. It's under a black plastic hood that hides 2 or 3 other relays. This one is controlled by the EEC to disable the AC under WOT. It's not likely to be bad, but it's one more thing to check.

You said the compressor clutch won't engage to accept freon...could you give alittle more detail about this because usually it can take a few minutes with the can of "freon" or 134a hooked up to build up enough pressure to engage the clutch, and when it does it may cycle on and off somewhat quickly until it starts to build pressure.

He said he bypassed the switch....that should kick in the comp.

Bypass the cycling switch and tap the face of the clutch. It's free and takes 30 seconds.
If the clutch engages, the clutch gap needs to be adjusted.
If not, you'll have to dig a bit deeper.

DON'T try to add refrigerant unless you know it actually needs it! Why is it that the first thing people do when their AC doesn't work is grab a can of refrigerant? That's like adding fluid to a slipping trans without even checking the dipstick first.
