Yes...several......5 miles at 5% is nothing- I can show you some out here that are 9% for 3-1/2 miles. And I don't happen to have a short bed, so the 29 gallon comment is meaningless......you keep grasping at straws and you are finally gonna get a hold of the one that breaks the camel's back.
It does.
News Flash: - the inmates really are running the asylum.
Hmmm, I am the one that is grasping at straws when you bring up the smallest pass I mention, then compare it to 9% for 3.5 miles. Imagine how many miles you could go with your tank at 17mpg?
And to say horsepower always wins has got to be a joke. Look at the 2002 7.3, it has 250/505. The 5.4 has 300/365. Is there one person on here that would argue the 5.4 will outpull the 7.3? (legit arguements only). haha

I wasn't comparing "the smallest pass" you mentioned, I merely stated 5% was nothing.....and I don't recall you mentioning any 9% ones......and I wasn't the one who said horsepower always wins. Your specious at times arguments are becoming tiresome, so.....if you enjoy your diesel, so be it......I'll stick with the V10.

I love this thread. I say again: bench pulling > bench racing
e-pulling arguments from different sides of the continent!! Gotta love that!!!
at least we have one thing settled after all this....

I will! The 5.4, when pulling at 5,000 RPMs is pulling harder than ANY stock 7.3 can. Do you really need me to sit down with a calculator for another half hour to spell it out for you?
I was trying to illustrate a point with my long math-heavy post. HP always wins. The 5.4 doesn't come anywhere near the diesels down low, but once it revs high it pulls quite nicely. And not just nicely, it pulls harder than a stock 7.3. It's a fact.
KelVarnson is 100% correct. May not be the best engine for the job, as it has to rev to make power whereas the diesel doesn't have to nearly as much, but it certainly can pull.

You guys or gals ( on here you never knoew today) are all physics majors, and have engineering degree's. I am watching these figures in aww. LOL
First off, every engine brings something to the table. (different strokes for different folks) Other wise we would be driving the same, living in the same houses ect...
Every engine has its RPM range based on many things.
Stock = MFG settings
Built = builders settings or what the expectations are out of an engine
I dont like to turn engines to fast. But It hurts to keep them below, or above the ideal rpms for that givin situations.
Diesels are good, but not for everyone. Just like the DODGE truck Flat head 6 engine. It made HP and TQ out of the gate till 1800 rpms.
I think V10s are a bit big, but again not for me either.
I do agree that I wished Ford would produce an engine long enough to make it good, and stick with it, Like the 302 or 352 W. But they do what they do.
I also wish,we as consumrs, could by the truck we want with the engine/driverain we want also. Like they do in the medium and heavy duty market. Hell heavy duty ,market, you can by a glider, and put your own drivline in it. If we could do that, I think it would keep the engines from constantly changing, especially here at FORD
What diesel engine mfg is going to dump countless hour into an engine for 1 mfg that is in trouble and can go bankrupt at any time... that is poor bussiness. They would be out all that cash, that is why these engines require mods to make them more reliable.

But there is a contingent of people that say a 7.3 can pull at 6.0 all other things equal. From what I have seen on the few 7.3s and the couple 6.0s, the 6.0 pulls harder, especially stock.
Hopefully these people aren't picked for a urinalysis test. The 7.3L is a dog compared to the 6.0L (all things being stock). Even at the end the 7.3 only had 250/525 compared to the first 6.0's at 325/550. The 6.0 is the hare and the 7.3 is the tortoise in this comparison.

That's because the 7.3L redlines at 3400RPM! At 5000RPM there would be parts everywhere ! Your screen name says it all. The 5.4L has what, 260/350 in 2003 and my 7.3L had 250/525. I don't think that the 10 extra HP is going to offset the fact that my torque is maxed at 1600RPM and my HP hits 250 at 2800RPM.
IIRC the saying is: there's no replacement for displacement, NOT there's no replacement...for horsepower.

My truck cost more (#1), is not cheap to repair (#2), doesn't do short trips (#3, that's what my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe is for), smells (#4), cackles like a rattling beast (#5) and was produced for almost 10 years (#6)...and I love it!
I didn't buy my truck to bench race, drag race or race up the hill with a load. I bought it to get me there with whatever I wanted. Every time. My truck has 250HP and red lines at 3400 RPM. I am not winning any contests until I take out a second mortgage on the house. I'm fine with my "wimpy" horsepower numbers (after all, that's the only measure of an engine, right? ). If I was 20 years younger, I'm sure I'd want to head down to the strip on Friday night and show a Mustang or two how it's really done, but I'll stick with my old and slow daily driver .
I believe that it was the Man in the Dos Equis commercials who said: you can tell when a man drive's a real truck when people turn and look at you when you come down the street because they think the garbage truck is early this week!

My 6.0 will spin all the way up to 4000. So what im gettin from all this is that the 5.4 v8 and the v10, which pull harder in a bench race, will take full throttle to do what my truck does at 1/4 to half throttle.

Where ya gettin that from? I run about 2250 at 70 or so.
4000 rpms is where the term mash the motor comes from, The days of the old Detroits LOL

On paper the 5.4 will pull harder then a 6.0, but it has to be at 5000rpm. Thats more then half throttle. My buddy has a 5.4 f250 and when i told him about theis argument he laughed. Anyways, Its gonna take alot of throttle to spin the 5.4 up to 5000rpm, it wont do that at 1/4 throttle. While with my 6.0 i can leave it at say 1/4 to 1/2 throttle and around lets say 2300 to 2500 for sake of argument. I havent found a dyno chart for the 5.4 for yet, but how much more can you spin and still be in the usable power band. My 6.0 on the other hand will be able to jump up to say 3750rpms and still be close to peak hp. Didnt spend much time on this yet, just pulled it out of my a$$ right now.lol If im feeling ambisush later, I might put more thought to it.lol
"on paper" and "let me get my calculator" and "the math doesn't lie"...
you can't make this stuff up!!! I LOVE IT, and by IT I mean the ignorance in this thread - it's everywhere!!!
