silly34 is starting off with a positive reputation.
I bought my PSD because I just like the sound of diesels and the turbo spooling. Oh and it was white.

I couldn't care less what a truck does over a measured distance or against a timing light. I want to know how it works on the road with my arse in the seat. Aside from that, how was that test run- did they make multiple runs? How was each truck equipped (cab config, gearing, etc)?
If you want to trust those test results for a 6.4 vs. 6.8 then suit yourself. How about some results of a 6.0 vs. 6.8 and a 7.3 vs. 6.8? And please provide a link to the article if you would (I didn't see one in this thread, just cut/paste text).

To expand on what Chase was saying, do the testers of these trucks drive trucks every day? If so, what kind of driving do they do? Do they drive them like a car, or do they work them. A truck that one might use for going to work and the store may be quite different than one used to haul trailers accross the country loaded.

What would every day drivers say about the different trucks?

Edit: Chase already answered the question.

Yep, I saw that. Based off that report, it boils down to what you personally like. They are very close in the drags, both loaded and empty, think the gas was just a hair quicker on both accounts.

This page is an opportunity to compare the relative performance of the single rear wheel gas pickups against their dual rear wheel diesel counterparts on the 15% grade.

Obviously, not an apples to apples comparison (primarily because of weight and rear axle and rear track differences between the 3/4-ton and 1-tons), but it provides some indication of the scenarios where each type of engine excels.
Gee... funny that your beloved article states in right up front that this isn't an apples to apples comparison...
The drag strip crap I didn't read, because I could care less what my truck or any other truck does on a drag strip... I want to know how the work IN THE REAL WORLD in REAL APPLICATIONS. And as far as I can tell, the grade testing was done on a road with level grade, no curves. That's all fine and dandy, but I want to see what happens on a real road, where the grade varies and the road turns. Even so I thought it was interesting that on the 7% grade your precious V10 and the 6.4 were basically dead even, and that the V10 edged it out on the 15% grade.
And like I've said several times, I still want to see comparisons on the older gen Ford diesels against a similar vintage V10.

I dont understand why the guys doing the test dont spec the vehicles being used. It is because they probably dont know enough themselves to spec them. They are not even trying to make an apples to apples test. Falling back on just saying what ever the manufacturers gave us is a lame excuse. All the test shows is that you can spec a gas motor with the lowest gear available to pull with a diesel spec'd with the highest gear available. They didnt even match the diesels in the test, the dodge had 4.10's. This is why so many people have said they dont like magazine test.

3/4 ton to 1-ton,there's not any mechanical or structural difference in the trucks-period. The blocks under the springs are it.
Dually vs SRW-yeah,there's a slight difference there.
As for the gears-that's how Ford equips them-talk to them about it.
It's as close to real world as you're gonna get.

Wrong... both trucks have optional gear ratios, at least last I checked they did.

We could easily create a real world test right here on the forums if we can find 2 people with like trucks that live close to each other and are willing to take the time. It would be much more beneficial as a comparison than the magazine test.

4.10 is the standard ratio for the 6.8L trucks, with 4.30 being the only option.
3.73 is the standard for the diesel, with a 4.10 or 4.30 being the option unless you order it an F450, then you can get up to a 4.88.

I guess you don't know how weight, gears, and truck configuration plays into pulling. I don't know what you pull, but I pull more weight then I should at times. I know how to rig a truck for pulling, and 3.73 gears is not a choice I would make on a dually.

EDIT: I didn't have the 3.73 option with my truck, and I bought it brand new.

Heck, I'm no racer, but I'd be willing to 'represent'

at least the HEAVY 6.0 side of the house in our Ex....

I am about 5 miles south of the Kennedale 1/8th mile course and would have been there this weekend for the DR Performance event except for a "prior engagement" ...

will even offer to put u up in our second master bedroom if it's too much of a drive

I have a 5 x 20 trailer we can load up and test that too

This truck ran on that track a few years ago.... haven't been back since, but would be willing just to see if we can get some more sofa racing fear talk going
