Aftermarket Siping

What's your experience / opinion on having the tire store sipe a brand new set of tires?

Discount Tire offers this for about $12 / tire, but my concerns are:

Does it really add to the traction?

Does it weaken or reduce the life of the tire?

Appreciate your opinions.

Worthless. If it worked, manufacturers would all be putting them out already siped.

I have read that it keeps tires cooler, adds to the traction, and extends the life of the tire. I would guess that manufacturers don't do it because of the additional time it would take to do it, which wouldn't be cost effective. Just my 2 cents

That's all of the reasons the tire guy gave me for doing it, as well. Just hoping I could find someone who's actually tried it.

From what I can tell, many of today's tires have some degree of siping from the manufacturer. So there must be some value in it, but again, I don't know if more (aftermarket) would add any real benefit or not.

check out siping on wikipedia, it has some pros and cons to siping

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siping

I would still want to hear from someone who has had tires like you have just to see what they say

Thanks for wiki link, never thought to check there.

The last comment in the link about voiding warranties got my attention.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that no one makes a good tire any more. Rather, they make adequate tires that have all of the cost saving corners cut that they can find. With that said, I would hate to risk voiding a warranty.

Thanks again for the link.
