My '66 289 burns oil when I accelerate and rev it up. It is not bad but noticable. I don't have the time or money to pull the engine and replace parts,Will an oil additive work and if so what are some good ones? I see a lot of them but heard some are just snake oil. I'm tired of fouling plugs up and needing to replace them.
youve proly got bad rings would be my guess. i dont think any additives will fix this. but i would go look at them and see if some say that they seal worn rings.

New PCV installed and connected to carb like in the instructions. It only does it on startup and hard acceleration. Buddy recommended lucas oil to see what it will do.
Stock valve seals are neoprene umbrella type. They get hard and crack. They will cause smoke at start up, and especially when there is a high vacuum situation. High miles? To be expected.

If it's the valve stem seals, you could probably change them out without tearing that far into the engine. I've seen 'special air fittings' that allow you to use the spark plug hole and air hose to keep the valves closed when you remove the springs and locks. I've also seen valve spring compressors that work well for doing it with the heads still on the block. There aren't any oil additives I know of that 'fix' bad rings or bad seals. One thing you may consider as far as the rings, though, is using a thicker grade oil. I take it the odometer has rolled over at least once... considering you don't know how many miles are on the car / engine?
You can also try the 'rope trick' where you remove the plug, install feet of rope, leaving a bit to hang onto, and then rotate the crankshaft to push the rope against the valves. Then remove the keepers, the valve springs and the remaining chunks of your valve stem seals. They are likely in bits, lying at the bottom of the rocker arm cover and plugging the oil return holes at the back of the head. Install new seal, springs, and keeper. Remove rope. Rinse, and repeat 7X....
It can be done in about 3-4 hours or less. After you do the first one, the rest seem simple.
