I have a 2005 Dodge Durango Limited AWD with 5.7 Hemi. Due to the whole Chrysler meltdown & gas prices, I am now upside down on the thing by $8,000
which sucks because when I bought it, I got it for about $2,000 under the Nada value...not that over-inflated KBB
anyhoo, I went to buy a 2009 Mustang Bullitt tonight. I offered the following terms. IMO they are realistic...a bit tough, but fair. I was willing to budge off my price about $1,000 if necessary
Just a wild guess here but they may be trying to build in a lot of flexibility for themselves when it comes to them trying to resell your Durango. It could potentially sit on their lot for quite a while before it sells, more so than other used inventory they have. A lot of other people out there are probably going to be hesitant when it comes to buying a Chrysler product new or used because of Chrysler's current status. Plus, the Durango / Aspen are supposedly going to be discontinued and are not selling well now.

Being HI it may be a bit different but I can't see them expecting to get MSRP before any rebates are even taken into account. The Bullitt's have a good $3K profit in them so you should easily be able to knock at least $2500, if not $3K off the MSRP then start with the rebates. With the 2010's out for a few months now there just isn't any way a 1 MY old car should sell for MSRP IMO.
BTW did you try an X plan, it would save the hassle of bickering the price down. If you can't get a Pin from someone here you can do the stock ownership route: http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showthread.php?t=475147
1.) In my opinion, there is no reason to pay anything substantially higher than dealer invoice. If the dealership tries to stick somewhere closer to the MSRP, the easiest way around that is to get an X Plan PIN. The current X Plan pricing is: Dealer Invoice - 0.4% of Invoice + $275 Administration Fee.
Alternatively, you can just play the bargaining game, but that could take hours upon hours of negotiations. This may be an unavoidable necessity if they decline to honor the X Plan pricing...which is in their power to do so.
2.) They are playing a shell game with the numbers, and that is one of those things that thoroughly bugs me. Between your offer & their offer, the price of the car went up substantially, but the "negative equity" from the trade-in dropped off. Basically, they moved a large portion of their "profit" into the new vehicle side of the equation, and minimized the negative equity to make you feel better about getting rid of it. The funny part is that if you do not "bite" on that offer, they will shuffle the numbers around a bit more. The unwary buyer will eventually be presented an offer that appeals to them simply because the numbers look "better"...even though the bottom line could be the exact same for the last dozen offer attempts.
I have been & will always endorse a very strict step-by-step approach. Negotiate the price for the new vehicle & ONLY the new vehicle. Once you have settled on an agreeable purchase price, you can move on to talks regarding the trade-in value. Only after the trade-in price has been settled on & is written on a piece of paper with initials on it do you move on to dealer installed accessories (may be floor mats, hands-free phone system, tonneau cover, or something like a sprayed-on underbody coating). After accessories, you iron out details & pricing on extended warranties & service plans.
By talking about a single piece of the "puzzle" at a time, you virtually eliminate the "shell" game where numbers are swapped around in an effort to confuse you into thinking that you got a better deal than you have actually been offered.
3.) On the top side (your offer), I see $4,750 in incentives & rebates, but down on the dealership's side, I only see $3,500.
Ford's website (www.fordvehicles.com) is generally up-to-date for incentives & rebates. So you may want to hit it, and follow the "Incentives & Offers" link found towards the bottom center of the first page. After plugging in your zip code & selecting the type of vehicle, you should get a listing of all currently available offers. You can also ask the dealership for a printout of available offers for any given vehicle line.
Keep in mind that all too often there are exceptions built into these offers. For example, almost every F-series (be it F-150 or Super Duty) offer explicitly states that it is not available on Harley-Davidson edition trucks. Other vehicle lines will obviously have their own limitations...especially when it comes to vehicles with limited production runs.
Good luck!!

Apparently my Mitary and Owner Loyalty discounts don't apply to a Bullitt...a GT does though.
I a thoroughly familiar with the Bait & Shuffle numbers game. I don't care how they present the numbers as ling as my bottom line is achieved.
I'll give them that my Durango isn't the most desireable vehicle in these times....but they still have $3,000ish of Flexibility built into the trade....and the 2010 Mustangs are on the lots right now. For ALOT CHEAPER than the 09 models.
I'm going to shine up & buff my Durango this weekend...needs it reguardless if I keep/trade it
but yeah, gonna try to get a X plan pin andsee what is what
If the '10s are cheaper they have all the Bullitt stuff minus the appearance of course, they even have better suspension if you get the Trac Pack (not to be confused with the current "Trac Pack"), but I don't think it is available yet.
I'd love to know Fords reasoning on the military discount, it is available on '08 Bullitt's, and they do not allow it on Shelby's last I looked.
I want an 09 because they look like Muscle Cars...the 2010 models look like a Hyndai from the back
plus the Bullitt has the lowered Suspension and the 315 HP...it is a little Blingy in the interior though
Well I've been to all three Dealerships now. Only 2 2009's left on the Island that are 5 speed GT's
Think I'll give them another week and make my offer again on the Bullitt. I know it's been sitting there since April at a bare minimum. I remember looking at it when I was buying my Expy. Plus that'll give me time to get some Ford stock & the X-plan pin
Btw, thank you very much for that link. Awesome info
They say the fees are associated with shipment, dock fees, transport from dock to dealership, prepping from shipping...etc.
which is utter crap. I've shipped 2 vehicles from Seattle to here, and it cost $975 and $1075 for them. They drive your car up inside a 18-Wheeler container with another car and it gets sealed up. Upon arrival, they litterally drive it out of the container and park it...then you walk to your car and drive away after signing for it.
Back in April I called them liars and showed them the section on Ford.Com that explains what the $795 shipping fee is for...then they finally dropped the Male Bovine Fecal Matter Fees.
FYI for anybody who doesn't know. That $795 fee applies to every single Ford made. You could buy a car off the lot at the Dearborne plant, or buy a car in Hawaii/Alaska, and all you are required to pay is $795 for the transport of that vehicle.
It's amazing the number of people who aren't aware of that
I did learn who has the cheapest fees though.
Honolulu Ford = $4,000 - 4,500
Cutter Ford = $3,500 - $4,000
Windward Ford = $3,000 flat on 'em all
My head hurts now. I've been dealing with sleeze balls all yesterday and today...and I feel dirty. Figure on Friday I'll go visit the Bullitt again...maybe the'll have a 4th of July sale. 1st thing Monday I'm doing the X Plan thingy
BTW, anybody with a spare X-Plan...please throw it my way if you can. I'd really appreciate it
Good luck! Have you ever heard of the Racecraft by Saleen? They are budget saleen mustangs. My local dealership carries them and has a awesome 485 hp version with a functional shaker hood and everything on sale for only $39,xxx regular price of $48,xxx. Or they have 2 420 hp versions for like $31,xxx and $29,xxx. They ship all across the U.S and Hawaii!!
Just a thought, to avoid those stupid island fees and get you back to driving a supercharged vehicle!! BTW I am not a salesmen there, but have worked with Rebecca many times and she is great! Tell her Jake sent you!
I've pretty much just given up on that Bullitt. and the 2010's won't be on the Island until sometime about 1 month out. Only 1 2010 GT with a stick...and amazingly it is on the same lot as the Bullitt.
EDIT: btw, those cars have me drooling. I've gone with the Roush...now I'd love to get my hands on a Saleen and compare some notes
