Alright I dropped the tank, emptied it really not that bad little bit stuff in the very bottom. One thing I noticed is the pick-up tube. The filter was off, does that make a difference? I fished it out. The tube looks like it's real high off the tank bottom, actually higher than the float, which to me wouldn't make any sense. I build fuel tanks all the time for boats, I put mine alot closer to the bottom. At least I know the tank will be clean. As I make my way forward, still don't know if I need a fuel pump or not.

You do need the filter. Not because of the crap from gas pumps, because without it, it'd be only able to suck up when the tank is half or more full. With the pick up tube in place, you can run the truck nearly empty. The tube is at least 3 inches. Don't worry about how it looks - it works.
D1AZ9A011A - FILTER ASY. Still available from Ford. For a good reason - it's a best-seller!
$29!! The last time I bought that filter, it was for $15...right here on FTE with Ed Olson's discount parts. www.partsguyed.com Only kink is, it's on the west coast.
I work in Annapolis, Flushed the tank real good, put everything back together. Did find out I had a cracked float, thankfullt I had a spare and the gauge is working perfectly. Blew fuel lines out again from the tank forward, Took the carb. back apart for the 3rd time. did find a piece of crap in the power valve. Made the heat stove, installed everything. 5 gallons of fresh gas, fired right up. I actually made it to the gas station. I had to nurse it back. Not getting fuel again, I'm going to put another new pump on it. It's the ONLY thing left. I've had it for today.

You have made good progress. I agree, it's the crap in the fuel system without the filter in the tank that has been disrupting the fuel flow.
I'd install an inline fuel filter just before the fuel pump so the new one won't get clogged until further notice. Then it should be clean from now on with the new sock filter and two fuel filters - one before pump, one before carburetor.
OK, new fuel pump on, so far so good. Took it out on a small road trip, made it back. If it did the same thing I would honestly wouldn't know what else I could do except put my spare 223 in it. I notice when setting the idle mixture, you have to back the screws out farther on these carbs like 21/4 -21/2 turns where anything else seems to be around 11/2. Normal? Chad- Thanks a million on all of your help, owe you one! or more.

Glad it's behaving well now. Keep driving and fiddling with it until it can be relied upon on demand.
Over two? You may have a small vacuum leak or you engine may have some wear. IIRC, I had to turn 3/4 in to get 20 Hg. But then again I did it while the idle was higher than it was supposed to be. I haven't reset it yet. I'll update after readjustment. But I must fix the vacuum hoses first. I have A/C and cruise...so I have a web of hoses to be replaced!
When you rebuilt the carburetor, did you seat the needles gently then turn two turns back out?
I started at 1 1/2 out. ended about 2 1/4 out, it would prob. run ok at 2, seemed to run the smoothest at 2 1/4. I didn't use a vac gauge. The truck has 116k on it.

Alright, as your thread title says,"I'm at my wits end". Take her out for a ride at highway speed. After 10 seconds or so at 60... cough, buck etc. let off, it runs, keep it below 40, make it home. look at the filter..pretty much dry. As I look at it for a while it'll pump some times, looks like it's pumping air sometimes. Go back and confirm vent is clear and not kinked. pull the sender/pick up, filter still attached, recheck every hose connection. When you 1st start it up seems to get plenty of fuel, under any load ends up starving. I pulled the top of the carb. off while it was running, hardly any fuel in there..I'm about ready to give up, this has been the most perplexing thing I've dealt with.

Every rubber hose, I guess I'll pull the hose off the PU and plug it, and blow air in it and see if I have a pin hole in a steel line, I'd think I would see gas leaking some place already. If there is a pin hole I hope it's not in the steel line over top the tank.
