Took my 94 4.0 to have the A/C looked at. Free service look over can't be beat even with a freon charge (or so I thought). Gentleman told me that would vacuum the system and read the gauges for a pressure leak down. great news since I haven't had air in it for a couple of years-maybe even three. Dropped off the van this morning and waiting anxiously for a call. No call so I went to the business at 4:30 PM since it closes at 5. "Hi Tim!-"Glad to see you made it!-"Tried calling you!---R-I-G-H-T! Al told me that it would not take freon even though it was only a little shy of a half pound. He went on to say that according to them my throttle position sensor or my ECU must be in an open loop condition and not allowing the compressor to come on. Even I thought that this was far fetched. I thanked the man for trying, got my keys and then went to inspect under the hood. I found a plastic loom about a foot long laying in the battery tray and my factory electrical tape undone around the connector to my compressor. Well, I threw my plastic on the ground and went to Auto Zone to have them run a code check on my van. All that popped up with my OB1 system was 2 and 3 digit codes related to 4 cylinder cars. At this point I'm thinking $@%@^@. I went back to the basics. In my center compartment i found a pointed pair of tweezers and then disconnected my low press side switch at my dryer bottle and plugged it into the connector. I hit the key then adjusted my selector "ICE COLD AIR---PRESTO CHANGO----AAAAAIIIIRRRR! I bought a low sp. press switch for 16 bucks. Tomorrow I've got an elder gentleman in town to evacuate and recycle my freon-vacuum out my system and then re-install new switch. I'll be freezing 2morrow as long as main gauges don't go below 30 psi and I'm up around 40 psi + hope that the system does not bleed down on the gauges.---C---ya Boz
oh yeah-the original fellow was going to charge me 250 bucks before any air work just to troubleshoot the system----I smell a CROOK

Some thing looks funny here. I'd say the guy is tight on money and was seeing if he couldn't milk you for some extra work or get you to bring it back in for more service.
GOOD TO GO!
Did the hot contact by using a pair of twizzers-low press switch bad. Clip installed in switch connector-air came on cold. Took off low pressure switch-some folks might not realize this but, there is a shredder valve under the switch that will trap the freon-no leaking-just R square the switch and good go. 16 bucks-can't beat the price. Used my pro gauges-pulling 43 PSI-NICE! Only thing is my MAX air switch isn't recycling the cabin air-I'll change this out and then it should be even colder.--Boz

bozzz,
The vacuum motor for the MAX A/C setting (closing outside air entry) is found inside the engine compartment, at the back of the HVAC box. (Driver's side of HVAC box looking inward fIf your is like mine (was) it gets full of road grit/pebbles/dirt/etc and is either stuck in positiion or the grit has worn a hole in the diaphragm. You can inspect the motor with a flashlight to see if the actuator lever is moving when the A/C MAX switch is selected. The lever should be pulled down toward the motor. Chances are, it is not moving at this time.

Thank you aerocolorado for the info. When you speak of the HVAC box are you talking about the area by the dryer bottle? Where can I find it to look at the door and see if it has a hole in it or not?---I appreciate your help.--Boz

bozzzz,
Yes, its that area. The blower fan is on the left side. Go to the opposite side of the fan and you should find a vacuum line going to the motor located an arms reach back. The motor is held on by two screws with a small, metal z-link connecting the motor to the operating arm on the vent door. Remove the screws and hold the motor and z-link together and turn slightly to slip the link from the operating arm. Vacuum lines are getting brittle at this age, so use care not to kink or they will break. The line to the motor is a slip fit. Just twist and pull. Test the motor with a vacuum pump or just hook a line and pretend its a thick chocolate malt.
