Yeah, but w a small block in a mason dump, i think i would want a creeper 1st of the 435 or T18
No creeper 1st in the T-19?
I can't get into double digits.
Mine is 6.32:1 (edit)but that might have been done when I swapped gearcases @ the transmission shop

IIRC the 88 351 is a Windsor so it has the SBF bolt pattern, the Cleveland bolt pattern is different. If your doing a rebuild get a used transmission and rebuild it. I have bought two manuals from the "yard" and only had to replace the seals and front bearing. This will give you less downtime for the truck. From the sound(s) of it your tranny is probably full of chips so its trashing most of the rotating parts.. I wouldn't drive it much, it might jam and leave you stranded.

Before you kill yourself over something minor, did you check the fluid? Is there enough? Does it have a odd smell or color? If its milky, it could mean it had water in it which would definitely cause noises.

Ummm, sorry for helpful info, but where can I get a 5 speed tranny for a 4.9l and all the clutch assemblies, etc as mine is a auto......
Does ZF make a tranny to fit a 4.9l?

The 351W and 351C both had small block bell housing bolt patterns.

well apparently the 542 was a light duty trans for a heavy duty truck.
All the ZFs were heavy duty transmissions. There is another 5-speed, made by Mazda that is a light duty transmission, but they were never used in anything heavier than a light duty F250 and did not have a granny first gear. I wouldn't waste time trying to convert to a 4-speed, whether you need overdrive or not. Transmission swaps like that are often far more involved than taking out the first and installing the second.
dieselbrad is right... I have a 4.9L with the ZF 5-42 tranny and just bought a replacement since my origional case was cracked and the gears seized up... I got my ZF 5-42 replacement very cheap $90! Yes there is special tools that you need to take apart and repress the gears in the tranny. I don't know exactly what the pressing is all about since my buddy did mine for a case of beer and parts $$$. Look on Ebay.com find a ZF and buy it! You didn't pay that much for the truck so just buy a good tranny if you need the truck back on the road! If the one you have can be rebuilt, you can rebuild it and keep it or sell it to make some $$$ back. Here there is one from a F-150 which probably gave the unit light use compaired to what you are doing. ZF's are great trannys just stick with the OE! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/87-92...Q5fAccessories
And yes to the guy who asked 5-6 posts ago. The ZF 5-42 will fit behind your 4.9 I6. Just make sure to not buy a big block ZF because they have a different bolt pattern (that means ZF's that have been behind the 7.3 diesel and the 7.5 460 gas won't work~!) if you need more information just leave another post.
All the bearings are pressed onto the shafts and then pressed into the case. Not like the T18-T18 -435 which all just fall apart and fall back together
thanks nstueve, that's a really clean looking zf.... but again, it's a lot compared to what i've spent on the truck itself
what is this tool called does anyone know?
I'm pretty sure that it's a set of tools and they are expensive! I kind of remember looking into getting them myself until I found out how much they were going to be! I think the kit was like $300 or more but can't completely remember... Maybe someone else could help??? Might want to try calling the Ford Dealership and asking their transmission mechanic...

THAT IS A DEAL!!!! theses are 600+ You are a fool to pass it up if they offer a warranty. The part alone can cost twice that to rebuild yours if there is some bad hard parts
