Transfer case recommendation for 78 Bronco

Hi all, I've got a 78 Bronco with a fresh 400 and rebuilt C6. The thing currently has the NP203 transfer case, & I was thinking about slapping in a NP205 that I have laying around. Are these my only two options?

I believe an NP208 will work as well. It's what came on the 80+ (besides the BWs).

Plusses. 2.61 low range vs. the 1.96? low range of the NP205. Quite a bit lower range.

Minuses. Its chain driven instead of gear driven, and it's aluminum.

I believe that all the tcases behind the automatics were 31 spline. I have used np208 and bw1356 in my Bronco with a c6. The np203 has a lower range than the 205 but the 205 is all gears no chain. The rest of them are all chain driven.

I am leaning towards the NP205 because of it being gear driven. Is there a way, when rebuilding the NP205, to re-gear it to have the lower "low" gear?

since you have both cases i would go with a doubler build 203/205

Isn't a double system mainly used for rock crawling and so forth? I am planing on ussing this rig mainly for a camping rig and fun around old logging roads.

If that's the kind of off-roading you're going to be doing, maybe just throw the 208 in there and get yourself the extra low range. They used them for a long time in the 80+ Broncos and they're not exactly known as a weak point. Some see some pretty serious abuse with mudding and rock crawling.

i would run a doubler for sure even for those uses. the thing is you have a C6 auto so gearing is huge. you could run a 4.10's with 35" tires so your hwy rpms are decent and then when your out playing you will always have extra low gear options.

Could someone explain to me exactly what a doubler is and how in general it is setup so I can understand it better? A pic would be great

alxsnmr is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Basically, the NP203/205 doubler uses the range gear of the NP203 transfer case as an intermediate between the 205 and the transmission (think of it as a gear splitter if you will). There is a custom adapter needed to mount the NP205 and clock it in the right position so that the 205 does the 4x4 selection.

http://www.alaska4x4network.com/showthread.php?t=8768

the above thread highlights this and has many pictures that show the 203 range gear on the front of a 205 transfer case. See the final pictures of what the finished doubler looks like.

All right, now that I know all about the doubler, I must have one! I live in Oregon, does anyone have a clue as to were I could get the custom parts at? I have the NP203 and NP205 already.
