64 292v8 Swap

What size/ type of ford motor can I use to replace the stock 292 in my truck now. I'd like to do as little modification as possible but I'd really like to see big power from the new motor (450-500hp) The truck is a 64 F250 and I'd love to retain the stock 4 speed. Any suggestions or articles?

400 to 500 Horsepressure on a T98A...........

Nothing but a Y block bolts to the bell you have. The T98A transmission will not bolt to any other thing other than a pre 65 I6 or Y Block.

292 swap

how much work is it to swap in a bigger more power friendly combo? By work I mean fabrication? Are kits available and from who?

There are tons of aftermarket brackets to install The 352 through 428, The 429/460s, 289/302/351W/351M400 and 351C, There are even mounts to install Mouse and Rat Chevrolet's. Aftermarket mounts are also made to add after 65 tail shaft mounted transmissions form ford or GM.

They run from simple bolt in to weld in.

Basically the 61 to 64s open front frame area and space allows all kinds of swaps.

I have a 472 EFI Ford in my 64 with a C6.

I've got an aluminum Speed Gems bellhousing that will mate a 352/360/390/428 FE engine to the T98. I posted a private message with my contact information in it if you're interested.

Not that familiar with the 292, may be surprized what you can do with it. Just rec'd the July 09 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine, there's another article in the Jan. 09, issue where they get into the E and F code Y block configurations. The articles were on a 57 Ranchwagon, and 57 Ford Custom, anyhow, thought they were interesting.

Yup, it has mounting ears on it, just like the original cast-iron bellhousing. It's Speed Gems part number SG103, and I have no idea how old it is.

You can turn 250HP out of a 292 fairly easy. Lots of tuning though. A Premium rebuild is gona cost you about 5K. About A grand on induction. A grand in an exhaust. About 500 for a good ignition.

250HP is quite a bit in a pickup. A 90s 5.0 mustang only had 225. Plus the sound of a Y is to die for. Throw it in third at 35 somtime. Makes people look.

Hey I have two t98s and I was wondering where you could find mounts to a ford 400 or chevy 350 and you seem like you know about them, I'd love a answer to this question it's been bothering me for a while!
thanks,
wes

Basicly all the aftermarket catalogs offer mounts that you can install to drop those engines in.

The 400 ford is a cleaveland or 429 style mount

Why would you want to do that? Use a Chevy motor OR a T98? Unless you just happen to have both laying around. I'm assuming you are asking about an adapter and/or motor mounts? An adapter for either is going to be expensive. Why not use a transmission that will bolt up to the 400 if that's what you have, though (from what I understand) I don't think the 400 is a wonderful engine???

No the 351M/400 uses the small block perch and engine insulator. 351C uses the same.

Only similarity between the 351M/400 and the 429/460 is the big block bell housing bolt pattern.

The 351C uses the small block 302/300I6 pattern for bell housings.
