clunk on engaging 1st Gear

in neutral, i take my foot off the clutch, depress the clutch, engage 1st... CLUNK!

back to neutral, foot off, etc.

It DOESn't do it if I keep the clutch down. Only if i take my foot of the clutch first.
Its not awful loud, but I can hear it and kinda feel it too.

It does kinda do it in 2nd as well, but I started noticing it in 1st cos (obviously) thats where I pull off from.

Could the clutch possibly need replacing... like the gears arent able to engage comfortably? It is very stiff to shift gears. My girlfriend wouldnt be able to shift it, but I'm used to it.

Any ideas GREATly appreciated

does it transmit through the shifter or does it sound like it is past the tranny? does it kick the shifter out? Is it constant if the clutch is out or just initially then works fine? what motor too would be helpful? mileage? Have you checked U-joints and t-case slack? probably no in theat nieghborhood but worth a try. What about your Clutch cylinder and slave cylinder are you getting full engagement? that would give you poor engagement and stiff shifting also check fluid level and consistency in tranny?

it definitely sounds like it could be this...
I definitely have poor shifting (very stiff). What steps do I take to rectify this. I have a Ford Courier, I think it might be a ranger in the US...

How would i improve the engagement?
