to get the left over black residue off the rim, once you are done polishing take regular flour from the kitchen put all over rim and wipe it off with clean rag, will take black residue off and still let shine remain. As far as ruining your aluminum rims...that is impossable...aluminum is the best and most forgiving metal there is..but if you want a quality high gloss shine, you must get that old nasty clear coat off...and never re-apply it..once you get the rims polished to your satisaction, the will be easily cared for if you take care of them each time you clean the rest od the vehicle, once polished,no more sanding or scrubbing, a light coat of polish and wipe clean..good luck, could talk for days on this subject...have tried, researched and done just about everything know to man to bring rims back to new, it can be done but requires a lot of hard work but once you are done you will be glad you did it...

I would add, always wipe them dry after washing them. Water spots over time will cause dull spots, that will have to be buffed back off.

I have a set of aluminum rims with out clear on them and have neglected them for a while even drove them in the snow and salt 1 winter!(That was just stupid on my half!!!) But got another truck this spring and wanted to get them lookin prettty again..... I have tried alot of things but what has worked the best for me is a product called Purple polish couldnt find it in any stores so I ordered it online and must say it has done the job for me along with the Mothers balls! I also have a flitz which dosnet work so hot on aluminum, likes to drive the dirt deeper into the wheel which makes it twice as hard to get out. With the purple polish I also got another product by them thats a aluminum deoxidizer with the 2 woking together I am very pleased!

first you want to sand off the clear (use like a 800 grit)
then you want to polish you can start with a tool of some kind but to finish up you want to hand polish
