as I said in my other post I'm about to rebuild my heads, and put in new pistons, rods rings etc.. while I have them off, I have a blown head gasket, so nows a good time to do it, i'm having them sent off to be cleaned and checked and then i'm putting in new valves, seats, springs, and so on, I'm wanting to know of any tips ya'll might have that would help. Also about advancing my timing, what sort of results might I expect, what do I need to look out for with this motor etc..., I'm definately a novice beyond simple parts replacement, at least as far as motors are concerned, I have however rebuilt a fair share of transmissions and rear-ends so I think I'm up to it, just need a few pointers.

The biggest problem a 360 has is the below deck piston height. Not fixable. There are no high-compression pistons for this combo, at least not off the shelf. Thus, the most often recommended change is to change it to a 390, or bigger. Which is pretty much what you will find in all the threads suggested above.
You can hop it up with headers and an intake. As for cam, the low compression is not your friend, and pretty much limits what can be done beyond the simplest of fixes.
OK, so how does all that stack up against your budget? I realize it's easy to tell folks to buy a stroker kit and this and that, but the reality is on your end. Find anything that looks like it will work for you yet?
I think I'll be fine, My wife has agreed on me spending $3000-3500, (with out divorcing me)and since he put all the old parts in, I pretty well figured on replacing everything anyway, I won't be able to go top of the line, I do however have a friend/customer I have done alot of handy work for that owns a chain of salvage yards, so I figure I might be able to find a crank, and maybe some other things that can be turned/refurbished from him, for free or real close to it, I have a pretty good I idea what I want to look for now, so I'll just have to see if I can find it, I have gotten alot of trim pieces from one of his salvage yards, and kinda peeked around a bit to see what else I might be able to locate, theres a couple torino's and galaxie's and a few trucks about my year that had nearly complete motors in them so I think I might have some luck, thanks
Considering the buddy factor, why don't you snoop through those cars and see if there's a good 390 core in there? That would give you the 390 crank & rods you need, and you may get a better set of heads and a 4V intake in the deal, probably cheaper than buying just the crank & rods. You might even get lucky and find one that would take a simple ring, bearing, & valve job. Just watch the year of the block, make sure it's a later one and has the 4 bolt bosses for the mounts, instead of two. The two-bolt block can be made to work, but might as well get the right one if you can. Also, the crank & rods out of a two-bolt block would work just fine in your original block
The only difference between the two is the rods, crankshaft & pistons.
360: 3.50" / 390: 3.78"
Agreed, except some 2V-4V differences- but I'm not sure what your point is? I suggested looking for a late 390 core, as he would get all the right 390 parts, plus another set of core heads, and probably a 4V intake & carb, and considering the buddy thing, real cheap- and have two core blocks, too. Might even have a few good parts left over to sell when it's done. The thing to watch for is the year of 390, to get the later 4-bolt mounting bosses- they didn't make 360's when the two-bolt blocks were being made
F100/350: No 390 4V's were available until 1974. VIN engine code: M. Given- but if you look back, I suggested a car 390- which a great percentage of are 4V's- and have proper deck-height pistons instead of down in the hole. He had said there were a few Torinos & Galaxies in there- so he wasn't limited to low-perf pickup engines. As I said, he might get lucky and find one tight enough for a simple rebuild
F100/350: The same 390 crankshaft, pistons and rods were used 1968/76. And as I said, innards from early car 390's will also work
360/390 2V heads are the same 1968/73 (C8AZ6049M), the same as 1968/71 cars used. Again, I suggested a car engine- where there are quite a few different head castings, and he might get lucky and get a better set- or not
As it looks as though it's a street runner truck, and not a heavy towing rig, he doesn't have to limit himself to the low compression, no real practicle quench piston-in-the-hole pickup setup- which provides a pretty good performance gain by itself, especially with a proper cam & timing set
thanks for all your help guys, I was able to talk to a friend of my dads that was racing fe's and clevelands (Fords) before my dad had even started, I hadn't talked to him in a few years since my dad had passed, but he sold me a 390 4 bolt thats been stroked to a 410, roller rockers, competition valve springs, ported polished, edelbrock pro perfomer intake 750cfm carb., and on, and on, with a 4 speed automatic for, $1500, and it never made it into a car after he built it, so it's all fresh and brand new, actually I've been spending the weekend putting it in. and it runs GREAT!, to be honest it shocked the heck out of me, my truck never jumped and spun tires like that with that old wore out 360. I expected a huge improvement of course, just somehow still took me by surprise, but he's isn't able to race anymore, so he's going to be getting rid of a lot of stuff he said, at one point in the conversation he laughed and told me if he remembered correctly he bought that block from my dad, which was kinda cool.
I will be rebuilding my old motor still, just to get into it, and get some experience, like I said I'm still a novice when it comes to motors, up untill now, the furthest i'd been into one was to replace bearings in this one, and I replaced a timing belt on a 1990 mitsubishi galant, other than that, alternators, water pumps and so on. So I'm eager to get into it.
the fmx is bolted up to a 390 right now he said he wants $450 together, but they need rebuilt he says, I don't know if he means for racing purposes, or if their just wore out? but he obviously knows its not for me, so I think the price is kinda high!
