spittin and sputterin

Well now my 87 ranger with a 2.9 wont stay running after warming up to operating temperature. The truck starts runnin as if it were runnin out of gas and then often times stalls out especially after letting off the accelerator. What do ya think boys and girls?

Thanks

Take about 20 minutes to:

Pull the codes

Check fuel pressure

Test with a vacuum gauge.

One of these very simple tests should give you an idea of whats wrong.

Heres a interesting link

Sounds like a fuel problem...check your fuel filter

Just put on a brand new fuel filter about two days ago, my truck ran much better, but I knew that wouldn't cause this to happen only after it has warmed up so I wasn't surprised when it spat at me again. But your exactly right lowdownndirty, It has to be something to do with the ecm going into open loop after hitting operating temp. But I haven't heard those words in years...not since EMS class at Wyotech..hahaha, the good old days. Anyways, thanks bud, that idea has been lingering around in the back of my head with all my other thoughts that I can't remember (had too much fun growin up). I'll start by seeing if I can pull some codes. My check engine light isn't on, but who knows maybe the MIL is broken too. Darn thing is just fallin apart, it's a sad sight...

88 is the 1st year of Ranger thaat was equipped with a check engine light. The 87 does'nt have one which is why it's even more important to check for trouble codes on an 87.

About 3 months ago my 87 2.9 was bogging down at 80 MPH, first thought was a clogged fuel filter, but it was only 6 months old. Next thought was maybe a bad intank fuel pump, but no change when I switched to the other tank. So that was'nt it either.

When I got home I pulled the codes "system pass" , no help there.

Checked fuel pressure no problem there.

Put the vacuum gauge on it & checked for a clogged cat no problem there either. Go figure that, theres nothing wrong so why was it bogging at 80 MPH?

I might never know since it's been running perfect ever since I did the tests??????

BTW, open loop is when the engine is cold & closed loop happens when engine temp gets to about 140 degrees.

Like lowdowndirty mentioned a bad MAP could cause you symptoms.

I would'nt be surprised if you pulled a code 22 "MAP sensor whacked" Thats a technical term.

whacked
Main Entry: whack Pronunciation: \ˈhwak, ˈwak\ verb
Etymology: Probably imitative of the sound of a blow
transitive verb to strike with a smart or resounding blow

I suppose that would explain why Ive never seen my check engine light come on at any point in time...hahaha and I'm about ready to "whack" this truck at this point.

So technically speaking "whacked " is not really a technical term at all LOL.

Well, you might want to "whack" your truck after you figure out whats wrong with it, but it's probably some simple little problem like a bad sensor.

I've had my 87 since it was new & it has 240,000 miles on it. It just keeps going & going & going.

Great little truck.

well pulled the codes...4 of them, but not a big deal. 67,Neutral safety switch, which hasnt worked since I bought it anyways, and not very worried about it. But also a 32 -egr not controlling, and an 83- egr control circuit failure, I wasn't too surprised. and a 91- air/fuel mix not within self test range. So I'm thinkin the DPFE sensor definitly needs replaced, and I'm thinkin probably the valve as well...

Looks like the EGR valve is stuck open & thats causing your 91 lean code. Thats also why it wont idle, it's too lean.

Take a look in your Haynes for how to test the EGR.

I got a chilton for this vehicle, and a haynes for full size fords of the same years and I've read through both of them about the egr, pretty simple stuff, just never messed with one before. But I just picked up an egr valve and it's dpfe sensor at the scrap yard....only 20 bucks so I figure just try em, what's the worst that can happen... but right now I'm takin a break from tryin to loosten that f'in exhaust line off the "new" valve. old rusted crap... oh well, you'll have that
