Fuse # 45

I have a 2003 F250 2WD Super Duty with Automatic. It keeps blowing fuse # 45. It is a 10 amp fuse. When it blows the truck no longer charges the battery and the gauges cease to function. The fuse blows when the truck is put into gear. I replaced the nuetral switch. No help there. Now it is not blowing fuses and the gauges are out and no charge to the battery. The dash is out but no obvious bare wire touching. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike

The wiring is chafed where it exits the shift lever.

Remove the steering column shrouds and repair.

Found it. It was chafed exactly where you said. Got to the Ford dealer just in time. Replaced it. It stopped blowing fuses yesterday but still no gauges and charge. I think it cooked something else. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike in Worcester

Check ALL the fuses, even ones that do not seem related.

Sounds like F45 is still blown. It also supples power to the cluster and is required for the generator to work.

No fuses are blown. Checked everyone of them. But the cluster and charging system are not working.

Then that part of the F45 circuit may be open-circuited or the other components may have gotten zapped.

I am going to try to determine/do a pin test. Something else got zapped for sure. I am going to try to find out if the instrument cluster has power coming in. That is the direction I seem to have to take. Thanx I will be back in a few hours.

Not yet fixed. I am supposed to have voltage at 4 pins at the instrument cluster. Only have it at 3. Traced it back to the fuse box. Gonna open that up today. I am really hoping it( the problem) is in there.

YES YES YES!!! Got it all set. Blown fuse panel. Someone sent me the required voltages/ohms and I was able to determine that my cluster was good. Traced it back to the fuse panel and BINGO. Summary is that the short in the shifter/overdrive lever smoked the fuse box. Now I am going to reassemble this dash. There are some bolts for the air ducts that are nearly impossible to get at so I am gonna try using plastic Zip ties instead. Thanks to all and especially who ever sent those schematics to my Email. Mike
