Oversized or Big Brakes

I've looked for both and couldn't find anything. As I'm already planning on 18" wheels and having just got back from a 3000 plus mile trip I know I need an upgrade. I already have an e-mail off to SSBC but thought I would rely on our collective genius. What's out there?

Just throwing out a wild guess, but have you considered the brakes Ford supplies on the F450 & F550?

4x4 is the hitch, most of the big brake companies only support the 2wd. My info is old, so you might want to review Bear, Brembo and wilwood too.

I appreciate the suggestions, I still haven't found anything yet. The F450/550 involves the 10 lug wheels if I'm not mistaken. A different look, but not what I want.

Who has big brakes out there and how did you do it?

I was looking for some brake lines the other night and found this.
AP Racing 6 Piston Big Brake System Ford Excursion
A little out of my league right now, but nice.
Or here:

Bodaddio,

You are a mad man. I guess I should be careful what I wish for...
These look like the real deal, and hey, it's only money. Thank you for the assist. These should look good behind the new wheels and I'm looking forward to the additional braking ability.

Thank you.

3,000 miles ? Is that the total since new ? How can I tell how many miles it takes before we "need an upgrade"

Total on the vehicle, just over 33,000 miles. 3,000 mile trip was made after the Icon kit was installed, along with fresh oil, filter, and fuel filters. I even added the finger-tip drain for the fuel filter. Oops, way off topic.

Anyway, after almost sliding through an intersection in Nebraska where I had plenty of time and distance to stop it convinced me that an upgrade was necessary. I checked the brakes before I left and all pads had plenty of friction material and the rotors had plenty of meat. Everything was miserable with rust, but then I spent the last four years in Wisconsin... Also, going to a larger wheel, from a safety standpoint, should include larger brakes. It's simple physics.

The prices on the ADP or what ever kits is about right for big rotors with 6piston calipers. If all else fails, upgrading to SSBC's force 10 or quick change calipers would be suitable.

Or you can go full out and mount JATO rockets backwards on the front fenders. If they can help lift an overloaded C130, they aught to help slow a truck and trailer.

ReAX,

When I read your suggestion about fender mounted JATOs I knew you were pulling my leg. We both know the fenders wouldn't support those.

But if I mounted them to my front receiver hitch...

Check out this thread. It has some good discussion over this topic as well as a few product reccomendations.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...cant-stop.html

AP Racing's big brake setup is mentioned on there too.

YOU GUYS THINK THAT THEY ARE ALOT OF $$$???? You should check out WWW.BOSSBRAKES.COM . The guy there told me that they starty out at 18" rotors. and the calipers need a minimium of 22" wheels to be able to fit. He told me that their brakes are so strong that they have a customer with an f450 with 52" tall michilins on it and it stops so fast that your head will almost go through the windshiels if you arent ready. BUT--- they cost a tad bit under $30,000. for the set of 4. I quickly passed and got a set of ART rotors and pads.

Meyerz,

I went with the Power Stop Cryo and Hawk pads because sanity took over. I had just had the right rear caliper and rotor replaced under warranty (piston hung up in the caliper bore and wiped out the rotor) and I thought replacing all rotors and pads seemed like a good idea.

I would like to tell you how great this combination is but everything is still in the boxes. Funny how work always comes first...

3-4 thousand dollars for better front brakes? Wow! I could tell my few friends how fast I can stop!
