What to look for in a used 08 f450??

Hey guys,
I'm looking at a 08 f450. Just wondering if you all could help me out with what to look for. I'm almost completely out of the loop on the new 6.4 trucks, other than what I've learned so far on FTE!! I do know it was built early on in 07 so I guess it's a job1 truck. I got the oasiss report and understand most of it. The truck has had the radiator replaced and I think the particulate filter on the exhaust was replaced also. I also remember a couple of computer reprograms/flashes. I'm thinking about going to drive it tomorrow. I don't really need the 450, the 350 would be sufficent for my 12k gross fifth-wheel camper, but I kinda like the heavier front axle, etc.. Please let me know your thoughts on your trucks, and anything that I should look for when I check this one out. Also, is the whole truck wider that the f350, or just the front axle? Thanks in advance!!

The wide track front end on that 450 I think is an option that seems to be highly desireable.

If it is on a dealer lot then just make sure it has all of the recalls/updates done.

Consider getting the extended warranty. The 6.4 has been a super motor for me but some people do have problems with it.

I think the 450's had reduced power for some reason, then, I think they reprogrammed things ti get them back up to the same as the 350/250's. Might want to ask if you can have your PCM programmed to give you the 350/650.

The F450 comes with the wide trac as standard, the F350 is an option. I don't think ford is going to repogram more power, It's the 4.88 geared trucks that are detuned, I have one.

Look for the 4.3 rear end. Plenty of truck for your 12K fiver. The 4x4 wide track front end is great.

With the F-450 you get better brakes, better tires etc. The 19.5 tires handle a load better than the ones used on a F-350. The brakes are bigger because they can fit in a 19.5 wheel. The F-450 P/U doesn't use the cab and chassis frame it is a modified P/U frame so its not quite as strong as a F-450 cab and chassis. The only down fall about the F-450 P/U is it only comes as a crew cab.

By todays standards a F-350 dually doesn't have the capacity to legally haul or tow what is being sold in the RV market.

Some of these new slide in campers have so much stuff in them they are heavy as h*ll. Your not camping anymore you have a house on wheels.

Oh don't buy the F-450 if you like complaining about bad fuel mileage. These trucks are heavy and with the gearing your not going to see anymore than 12mpg.

That was the F450s with the 4.88 rear end only- they were down 25bhp. 4.88s aren't offered anymore, but make sure the one you're looking at has 4.30s as they always had the full 350bhp/650tq

I appreciate all the help so far. The truck does have the 4.3 gear. I looked at it and drove it the other day. I like the truck, just still haven't made up my mind. Still kinda back and fourth between it and a dodge. Not to open up a can of worms or anything!! Still just kinda weary about the 6.4 since there are so many people having so many issues. But then again, I guess Dodge is in the same shape. Anyway, still haven't bit the bullet. Keep me updated with any more info. Thanks again guys!!

Remember on a site like this your more likely to hear from those having problems than those that have not. On Sunday I'm leaving to pick up my 450. I'm driving my 2008 F350 swr that I love and have had no problems with but need a bigger truck 633 miles each way. I plan to be home Monday night and will let all of you know of my experence. My 450 has the 488 gears.

Well I finally got up the nerve to bite the bullet. I called today to tell my salesman that I was ready to get together on the price. He then told me that the truck sold Saturday! Dang it!! So I guess I'm still in the market. Oh well.

We have an 2008 F450 King Ranch that we are willing to walk away from if interested! We want to trade up our 5th wheel for a BUS! Truck has 16K and 4.88 gears. 4x4 + extra duty suspension. Pulls our 40" TT very well.. Our trailers gwt is 18K.

The difference between a 2008 F350 swr and a 2008 F450. On Monday I drove my F350 super cab 4x4 long box to Clomubia Missouri. Map Quest said it was 633 miles, My drivers infromation center said it was 651 miles and I got 15.6 mpg again on the IC. Tuesday I drove back home the same way in my new to me 2x4 F450. The IC said it was 687 miles home and I got 12.2 mpg. The 350 has 3.73 rear and the 450 has 4.88. The temperature was in the mid 90 tys so the air was on both ways and I drove the same speed, about 65. The 450 ran about 500 rpm's higher. I had a little wind on the front of the 350. I was surprised how well the 450 rode, it was as good the the 350 95% of the time. When we did hit a bump you could really feel the difference, there was also a section of interstste where the expansion joints bounced the _rap out of me, but changing to the left lane solved that. The wide track front end looks cool. On the way down the 350 went into regin once and on the way back it happened twice and each time it only lasted a couple of minutes so that will need to be looked at. The 350 is an XL and the 450 a Lariet. I actually like the cloth seats better than the leather they were hot on my back. I found this truck on cars.com and would encourage anyone looking to check this site out. They still show several pages of new 2008 trucks. I went after one that was an XL and was 4x4 that sold for $35,000.00, I guess I was the second guy to call.
