Whipple Supercharger for 5.4L Super Duty

Hey Guys,

I know that there are many of you with the 5.4L engine that would like the additional performance (HP/TQ) of a supercharger. I have spent hours searching the web trying to find anyone who offers a supercharger for our application but have had no success. So, tonight I emailed Whipple Industries and requested that they consider modifying their current F150 5.4L application to the F250/F350 5.4L application. Hopefully Whipple Industries will see that a few modifications to an existing application will open up a entirely new segment of the market.

If you think that you would be interested in this new application, post up a response. I'll provide the link to this thread when Whipple Industries responds to my email.

Thanks!

There are numerous applications for the 5.4L 3V engine in an F-150. Rousch, Whipple and Procharger to name a few. The problem is when you start talking electronics. These companies usually have a tune for the engine with a new supercharger, which also alters the transmission parameters. Those tunes won't work on a 5R110W transmission, which is a Super Duty only transmission.

Actually I had planned on parting together a system from them once I had the cash to spare and a good distributor. Overall the intake elbow/plenum and ducting were the big differences I remember when I looked at (compared to the F150.) Which you could probably use the F150 kit with a couple of parts from the V10 F250 kit to get the ducting right, but you would need the bigger TB.

I am curious as to why they never made one for the F250 5.4 when they made one for the v10 monster? I can't see there not being a demand for the F250 5.4 application

I agree! It amazes me that there are so many aftermarket products to support performance gains for the diesel engines and even the V10 engines but what engine truly needs to most support... the 5.4L engines. I know the aftermarket looks a absolute numbers of vehicles with a certain application but I'm hoping that with higher gas prices more people are purchasing the Super Duties with the 5.4L engine... hence more demand in the market.

Odd, when you consider the majority of the gas engined Super Duty trucks have 5.4L V-8s.

Its real simple. The f250 is a truck not a dragster. If u need more hauling and towing power it is way cheaper and much more convenient to buy a diesel powered truck. Then u have warranty and dealer support. Hence if u try to cobble together a bunch of aftermarket junk either by supercharger or turbocharger all u ever have is a unreliable toy or novelty of sorts. A turbo would probably be the best choice for towing and less money and more reliable than a belt driven blower if u really need more power. Or just order a new SD and click the 600$ box for the V10 option and u will have more useable user friendly power then u will ever get out of a modified 5.4 V8 hands down. Its just not cost effective or practical. Resale would probably be very difficult on a blown 5.4 or 6.8. Harder then selling ice water to the eskimos i suspect.

A supercharger kit for SD 5.4L would certainly be fun, but not something I would buy, at current prices.

If you're spending $4k - $5k for a supercharger kit, you just as well spend that money and buy a PSD or spend way less money and get a V10. Therefore, the demand for these upgrades probably isn't as high as you'd think.

Now, if they could somehow put together a supercharger kit for $1k then it would sell like hotcakes.

Edit... KSCRUDE must've been typing at the same time I was!

My point is that 85% or more of the R&D is already complete. The supercharger that Whipple manufactures for the F150 is directly compatible with the F250/F350. I would imagine that there are only a few parts like brackets and the PCM that need to be modified for a completely new application. If I thought that I could invest a minimal amount of capital to expand an existing product line, then it would be a no brainer to move forward. Whipple has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

If you get no where with whipple, you might try Kenne Bell.

I agree it shouldn't take much to make them fit. If the v10 plenum fits on the v8's blower (I'm almost sure it will), then it would just take the manifold down of the f150 kit and plenum out of the v10 kit with a blower in between.

I like Kenny Bell and believe that they manufacture top shelf products. However, their supercharger is for the 5.4L 2V Lightning engine. The amount of modifications required to adapt to the 5.4L 3V engine may have been too much to ask.
