tricks for e4od

boy, if ford were to ever admit to a white elephant..............
anyway, i have an 89 f350, diesel with turbo and the infamous e4od. learned a trick while searching for alternatives to having a shop (which there are few i really trust) do a fluid change on my 96 explorer which don't have a torque converter plug. when i changed the fluid in my e4od yesterday, i unhooked the return line (the one toward the back of the tranny), slipped on a length of rubber line, laid the end into a catch pan, cranked the engine and let it idle until the fluid stream into the catch pan pulsed and slowed down. when i dropped the pan then, there was very little fluid left. much better than dropping the pan with it full of fluid going everywhere. then it was simple to remove the converter plug and finish draining. this also gives you an indication of any restriction in the cooler lines. ford guy told me it should pump at least a gallon a minute. mine is much more than that in that it pumped out 6+ quarts in a little over 30 seconds. this tranny is the 3rd in 85k miles and has only 4k (a reman unit) still having problems with it and the shop that installed it said a fluid change would remedy them. the fluid was browned but when viewed in sunlight, still showed its red base. did have some sparkley in it like metalflake but the magnet only had a relatively small amount of black crud stuck to it. if anyone has any suggestions, what it is doing is: 1)even when warm, but especially when cold, makes a whirr, almost vibaration when idling, changes pitch when sitting still changing from r to d etc (previous tranny did this to a much greater extent especially the morning before the pump trashed and it died). 2)the first time through the gears in the morning, i don't know how far it would go, but it will not go into od. next time an from then on, it is ok. 3)lastly, when towing above 60 or so, there is a knock, not consistent, mostly during light acceleration, but definately coming from the tranny area, maybe near the front. a tech told me it may be the converter slipping in and out of lockup. can't verify this with rpm. guy that installed it said that couldn't be or the computer would show a code. had another say that the computer and codes in 89 wouldn't show that much info. see why i have so much lack of trust. any suggestions with something especially i can check out for myself would be appreciated.
