How To Improve Power On 1976 460
#16
Big Dog,
I dont have that motor home any more, broke down on a trip, towing service came, hooked up & ended up totaling the motor home & trailer.
I have some more info though since that last post.
The stellite exhaust seats didnt hold up. The next long trip after the trip above trip, the exhaust valves started reseading up in the head again & the skips came back.
Repairing the heads after that trip, I installed carbide exhaust seats from Tucker Valve seat out of Tenn & no more head problems. Next was the trip the towing co totaled everything. Come to find out, lost oil pressure from either the dizzy shaft, the oil pump went out or either the oil pump pickup tube broke off (AGAIN).
I'm only guessing what failed, but I know the engine lost oil pressure reason for the break down.
After dealing with the stock 460 heads, I would say choose a cam you would like, the #3500 Summit worked fine for me, but on the heads, get the sodioum filled exhaust valves & the have the carbide exhaust seats installed & the port the exhaust ports as large as you feel safe carving & maybe a good set of long tube Thorley headers.
If your pulling the weight, & even a c class would be, you got to do everything you can to get the exhaust heat out of those heads.
Summit or Jegs, cant remember right off where I ordered them, but they stock a set of rocker arm post shims, in two different thicknesses to shim up the rockers & gain some valve clearance should they start to loose clearance. They are easy to make yourself as well, just some thin tin & tin snips & a hole puncher & get the job done.
