F-2/F-3 Timken Rear - Studebaker Guys Want Them

You guys that have the stock F-2/F-3 Timken 51524 rear ends taking up space in the shop might like to know that Studebaker guys might have interest in them. This ebay posting explains it. The 4.86 is a more desirable gear than their stock 5.57.

Studebaker 2R10 4.857 Rear Axle:eBay Motors (item 320382148299 end time Jun-22-09 10:30:00 PDT)

There's a thread going on one of the Studebaker sites now about it too. I had to chime in. Here's the link.

Wish I had known that, I just sold a F-2 rear axle for $25 on the 'Bay. $25 is better than nothing. I have another one in the back that I am saving as a spare.

I have scrapped a couple recently and still have a couple more. Not much interest locally or in the classifieds as bob also found. I have some good 14 inch rear brakes if anyone is interested.

As Stu mentioned on the Stude Site - Racers like these for the Sprint Cars - Dirt Trackers and Evean the Salt/Dry Lake guys. So check the Racers News papers for ads.
They make a good quick change and you can run a gazillion ratio's
NOTE They are making helical cut gears for the street now - doesn't sound like the Killer Bee's are chasing your booty.

I just responded on that site, I have been holding off on scrapping mine from a F3. I would rather someone got it cheap etc vs me scrapping it.
How can I tell what the ratio is on mine? is there a tag on it somewhere like the one on ebay?? or were they all 4.86

Thanks
Josh

Josh - The Chassis Manual says there should be a tag. If it's still there, from the manual diagram it looks to be located at the immediate right hand side of the case looking from the rear of the axle. I've never seen a truck with any ratio other than the 4.86, and when I asked last week on a different thread I got no indication that anybody had ever come across the 4.11. The 4.11 is shown as an option in the Chassis Manual but isn't mentioned anywhere else I've seen in the sales literature or service manual. Chuck mentioned it to me and that's the only reason I knew about it.

Thanks for your offer to the guy. He's emailed me since off-line and seems like a good guy. All these years we've felt like we couldn't go fast enough with our stock rear ends. We didn't know how nice we've got it. Pity those poor guys with their 5.57s.

And to add some to the discussion of the quick change center, here's a pic of one.

thanks Stu, I looked but no tag on it. but it is dark out so I will scrape around a little bit more in the daylight. so chances are it is 4.86 then.

now I got to thinking again since I found a 1953 F-350 locally, I havent seen it personally yet but was wondering if it may also have the same rear axle??? as the bonus builts? any idea.
I was/am getting ready to go get a 9" for my F-1 and the place (Pick and Pull) I think will give a $25 credit with a core trade in so my last resort will be to take this axle in. maybe they will accept just part of it/

thanks

Josh

According to the Chassis Manual, starting in '53 the F-250s used a Timken A-150 and the F-350s used a Timken B-150. I don't know what the difference is between an A-150 and a B-150, but I know that the A-150 looks different than the Timken 51524. The pinion case extends out a lot more. A few years ago I parted out a '53 F-250 Marmon Herrington and have kept it's rear end. Here's comparative pics of each. First the 51524 then the A-150. Stu

The 53 F350 is complete and selling for about the price of scrap! people need to stop doing this! I keep buying these things and I really can't help myself. I am going to call this guy in the morning and go pick it up.

LOL I think I'm nuts either way just the thought makes me nut's.

Oh well, I haven't had Code Enforcement in my neighborhood yet so here's for trying!

If only I could restrain myself from looking at these darn classifieds all the time! plus the wife and kids are gone thurs through the weekend, won't she be proud when she comes home to yet another truck. hmmmm only downside is its not a bonus built, this one would be the first non bonus built truck to come home with me. still cool though!

One of the Studebaker guys is asking if any Fords ever used a Timken 53625 axle. The Chassis Manual doesn't show any from '48 to '56, but there's got to be other years that might have. Anybody have a reference that would tell for sure? I've asked the guy what year Studebaker they came on. When I hear back I'll add it. Thanks. Stu
