Uh, excuse me but the ONLY thing the 3/4 ton axle ever had in common with the passenger car rear axle was the wide-5 bolt pattern allowing the use of '36 to '39 car and 1/2 ton truck wheels. Tom

I believe that rearend is from a 3/4 ton (or 1 ton) GM pickup circa 1948-54, maybe even up to 57?

stockcar nut I guess I should have been more clear. It is my understanding that in 1939, and only 1939, the 3/4 ton models had the passenger car axle with a long torque tube. I could be wrong since I have never seen one of these, but the Green Book and James Wagner's book, Ford Trucks Since 1905, both indicate this.

The Timken was definitely used on 3/4 ton from '40 to '52 and on 1 ton from '38 to '52.

Point #1, you have to know how to use the Ford parts manual refered to as the big green bible before it will you anything. Point #2, I grew up working on dirt track race cars and have worked on a ***** load of model D/Y rear axles and I assure you they share nothing with the pass. car and pickup axles. By the way, the torque tube/drive shaft is not part of the rear axle, it is merely attached to it and grouped with rear end parts. Tom

Where? No see um.
Page 126 in the "Green" bible (1928/47 Ford Truck & 1928/48 Passenger Car Parts Catalog) where the ring & pinons (basic # 4209) are listed, does not list any 1939 passenger sharing the same rear axle with a truck.

Passenger Cars & Commercial's only...what Ford once refered to 1/2 tons as.

I think you are confusing Commercials with trucks.

I checked the green book this weekend and NumberDummy is 100% correct. All 122 inch wheelbase trucks used the Timken axle '38 to '52. I don't know where I got that idea about '39 3/4 tons, but it was wrong.

You would think that if quick change rear ends were designed around the F-2 rear end,
then the 4.11:1 ring and pinion they offer for the quick change would fit the Timken rear. Seems like Franklin or Winters tech guy could answer this question and maybe everyone could get the higher gear. I'm just saying?

They do fit. I've got two sets of the reproduction 4.11s in my front and rear MH axles. Chuck Mantiglia installed them when he had my axles and transfer case in his shop doing their rebuilds. I don't know whether Chuck needed to do any small mods to either the gear sets or the cases to make them work. Maybe he'll check in and explain. Stu

Well, I emailed Chuck and he says they can be made to fit. It's not a bolt in. Stu

The reason Q-C gears are not a direct bolt in is they have a splined pinion to accept the gear sets, instead of the the tapered key way pinion of the stock Timken set. Tom

Can anyone post the procedure for installing a quick change 4.11 (or 4.12) in a Timken axle (preferably with pictures and part numbers)? I would like to do this myself. I am not in the habit of paying someone to work on my truck...
