WHAT kind of tranny do i have

hey everybody i have a 91 ford explorer the tranny is going south what kind of tranny dose this have in it
it always has reverse but sometimes when you put it in drive there is nothing if you put it back in park then back down to drive it works but when it is cold it really dosen't want to go foward but sit and let warm up and it runs
i am contemplating trying that tranny conditioner crap that softens the seals and makes it spew oil like the exxon valdeze.
or buying a new or rebuilt valve body
any advise would be greatly appeciated MIKE L

I'm assuming you've probably already checked the fluid and it's fine, so the problem lies elsewhere. I don't even pretend to know much about auto trannies except for the basics, so if it's not a fluid problem, I don't know.
As to the type of trannie, if its the 302 Explorer it'll be the AOD/E, and if not it should be the A4LD. I'd double check this against an owner's or repair manual, or even call up a dealership, but I'm pretty certain those are the options.
Good Luck.

I know its one of the obvious things to check ... BUT ... did you change the fluid AND the filter. To make a long story short - I had a guy doing some work for me, paid him to change the fluid and filter (among other things), he took the money but never did..a couple of months later the truck started loosing power and acting like yours does, until I changed the filter myself. What a difference!

Of course I went through a bunch of troubleshooting prior to changing the filter out - because I thought it had been done already! Sometimes it doesn't pay to hire a guy for odd jobs....

Just thought I'd be Mr. Obvious... in case you haven't thought of it.

Good Luck,

Randy

Hey rd,

Did you then proceed directly to the fella's location and beat him severely about the head, neck and shoulders? Three things you don't mess with: My wife, my son, and my Ford!!!

I wanted to / should have - but since he was unemployed at the time, he just found a job out of state - and I hope it was as a chevy mechanic!
