I have a 1995 Ford F-250 I get around 10 miles to the Gal. in city on the hwy I get about 13 to 15 mpg if I use the cruise control and don't drive over 63mph. I have a Scan Gauge II and I am going by that. Hope that gives you an idea my truck has just over 175,000 miles on it. I use a stock air filter I used to use K&N but it seemed to not improve my mileage so I went back to stock filter. The only problem I am having with my truck is the transmission and I will have that taken care of by wed.

I used to have a '97 F-250HD regular cab, 460, auto, 4x4, and 3.73 gears and I always got 13 mpg empty or towing.

I have a '96 F-250 with a 460 in it. I have 3.55:1 gear ratio and the E40D trans. I put on a free flow muffler, dropped down to 60 MPH on the highway. I was averaging 15 MPG but 60 MPH was getting too slow so now I am driving the speed limit and was getting 12.5 to 14 MPG. I now have a set of headers and slightly smaller tires on it and will know my new averages next month when I get back from my trip to Idaho.

Those are some mighty impressive mpg's for 460 cid v-8s trucks. My brothers 79 never gets over 8 mpg. It only has about 80K miles on the clock. New carb, tune the works. It's just an F-150 with 3.27 or 3.55 ( I think) rear end and the C 6 auto. Anything wacky with that? I think so. What to do for an improvement in mpgs? Opinions please....!

My Dad bought a new F-150 in 1979, a stripper with the 302, 2x4, auto, reg. cab. LB. I don't know the rear ratio.

And it never got over 9-11 mpg.

I blamed the 302. LOL

Not entirely true. If it's an auto, you could also have a C6 in it up till 97 in 250/350's. If so you will get even worse mileage with that compared to an E4OD.

I have one sitting behind my 460 in my 96 F350 4x4 right now. Some f250/350's up till 97 had the C6. I have seen many with my own eyes. I like knowing that even though I get raped on gas mileage with the 3-speed, my drivetrain is bulletproof.

Ask him for proof and if it true find out how everything is set up on that truck. I can't get over 7 mpg city and maybe 10 highway.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot to post my results I have made a few runs and my mileage was at 17 MPG average with a best run of 17.5 MPG.

I have since put on a Mustang Cobra throttle body and have not yet made a new cruise control bracket so I do not know what my current mileage is now. I have to hunt down a gremlin and replace my rear fuel tank first though. Leaking tanks don't help mileage much

Would putting a gear vendor type overdrive in with a C-6 make much of a difference in MPG to pay the capital cost of the gear vendor.

Lol you live in Texas. You have no idea about plowing snow. Most places/guys run autos for plowing snow because it is faster. Think about it this way- you can slip an auto into reverse while you're going forward very slightly and you can slip it into drive while you're still moving backwards slightly. Try doing that in a manual and you'll grind the gears every single time and the backup go forward is just as hard on a clutch, if not harder than plowing with an automatic. This is especially true in smaller areas where you would have to slip the clutch so you don't go too fast and then push it right back in to back up again. You only have 2 hands and it's a whole lot easier to control your plow in an auto when you're not worried about shifting from 1st to 2nd on a long push. So say you're starting to scrape a little and you want to lift up the plow and you're at the top of 1st gear in a stick so you let off the gas a little and lose momentum while you adjust the plow and then get back in it after you shift (possibly causing your tires to slip) or you let the truck shift for you and you focus on controlling your plow.

Almost everyone I know that plows commercially uses an automatic for those reasons. I know a couple people that plow with a manual on their own property and it's not their favorite thing to do.

Your right, if I had to choose I would go with an auto.
I used to think that a manual was always better, but now that I drive one of each ( a 4R100 and a ZF5) every day, I don't always see it that way.
