390 to a 427?

My nephew is trying to tell me that he built up the 390 in his truck up to a 427. I think he is full of it. How would that even be possible?

Only way I'd know of is to swap engines or blocks, unless a 390 block can be bored out to 4.230" from 4.050" (.18") I don't know of a stroker kit for a 390

You can make a 410 out of a 390 with a 428 crank. That is pretty much what Ford did in '67 & '68.

You can use other stroker cranks to get the 4.05 bore out to 445 or so, with an .030 overbore. Read the FAQ's at the top of the FE forums and you will find a .060 overbore is questionable in some blocks. A .180 overbore is not possible. I doubt he sleeved it for that bore.

Then there is the matter of the mains. 427s got cross-bolted mains, 390s did not.

Then there are heads, and the valve train, starting with solid lifters for one.

You can make a 390 into a 400+ engine, but it is not a "427" as Ford built them, and won't be no matter what you do to it.

So, find out what he did, and then you'll know what he's got, but it isn't a "427" as issued by Ford.

4.050 x 4.050 x 4.150 (Eagle crank) x 8 x .7854 = 427.6
4.130 x 4.130 x 3.98 x 8 x .7854 = 426.5 It`s possible if you juggle the numbers just like your income tax

you can almost get a 430 ci 351 winsor but there are aftermarket blocks and other factors so its hard to say who has what nowadays.

One way to tell if he's stroked it...is pull a plug..and measure it with with a dowel in the hole with the piston at BDC and again at TDC....Mark it in both positions...and see what the stroke is..

428 crank with .030 overbore turns a 390 into a 416.27 ci.
