If you put new rings on used pistons without checking the cylinder bore you could be wasting money and time.
On any engine that you're unsure of the bore I would definitely have it checked. If it needs boring, than bore it and then hone to fit the pistons. YOU will have the piece of mind knowing it was done correct, AND you will have a better engine too!
Case in point: I traded for an '81 1340cc Harley 12 years ago. It looked and sounded great but little did I know it was a timebomb. The previous owner had installed new rings in worn out cylinders on used pistons. The used pistons weren't the main issue, BUT the cylinders needing overboring was!
I drove the Harley about 600-700 miles than the rings gave up. After disassembly and measuring parts it was determined that the pistons, rings & especially the cylinders were worn out. The pistons "might" have been ok in a standard bore but not in a worn out bore.
Do yourself a favor and have an experienced mechanic measure the bore BEFORE you do anything else!! You will save yourself alot of grief & money, PLUS you will know what you have!!
