Just wondering if I should be concerned to check/replace timing chain on my '92 Aerostar 3.0 Vulcan. It has 135,000 miles. Anybody have a chain go and at what miles? Maybe a non-issue?
TP, I replace my chain at 140k miles, not knowing if it had a plastic gear or all metal. The plastic-toothed gears get brittle and decide to turn into pieces about that mileage. I found that it has all metal gears.
If you do replace the gear, be aware that the bolt holding the cam gear in place is SPECIAL. It has an oil passage drilled to supply gear and chain lubrication.
Just check the amount of play you have on the crankshaft before it starts to turn the cam. At least you don't have to worry that the gear will come apart.

I've owned it since 1996 (it was an off lease owned by my company prior to my purchase).
WRT the chain, my V6 has 240,000 miles on the original engine/transmission, and, the original chain. Short of the water pump, alternator, belt tensioner (all bolt-on accessories), the only significant issue has been an oil leak from the rear seal. Since I don't want to have the engine pulled just for that, she just drip, drips.
Good enough for me. I'm not going to worry about the timing chain anymore. I'll print this thread so I don't forget. Yeah, that little 3.0 may be underpowered, but it is bulletproof, so long as you don't let her ping.
