390 Build Update

Just wanted to let you guys kow what happened with my recent 390 build. I pulled the engine in Dec. and took it to my uncle who is a builder in Lake Havasu. The block was cleaned, detailed, bored to .030 over, and was decked .018 on each side to true it up. The rods were reconditioned, new bushings, and fitted with ARP bolts. The 2U crank was polished, (specs are stock). Rotating assy balanced. The pistons are Speed Pro forged 10 cc reliefs with a 1.776 compression height. I'm not quite sure what rings he went with. The cam bearings were replaced, and the cam I went with was Comp Cam's X-treme Energy 262/270 (218/224@ .050) .513 int/ .520 exh. 110 lobe separation. Timing chain is Summit's billet 9 position double roller. The oil pump is a high pressure unit.
The heads, C6-AE-R's were pocket ported (by me) and reconditioned with new valves, guides, seats, springs, retainers. Surfaces were decked to true. Rockers are stock, and were checked and cleaned. Gaskets were all Fel-Pro units. The head gasket I haven't been able to find specs for, but figure they're around a .040 compressed height, 10cc compressed volume. Intake is an aluminum P.I. which was gasket matched on the top and sides of the ports. Carb is an Edelbrock 1405 which is either a 600 or 650 cfm (haven't figured that one out yet), with a 1" aluminum spacer. Ignition is a stock unit fitted with a Pertronix Ignitor and stock coil. Headers will be Flowtech units, but my Uncle used the set they have at his shop for the dyno.
The compression ratio I figure is about 9.6:1.
After being run on the dyno, the results I'm told end up being a best of 338 hp and 405 ft/lbs. I'm fairly pleased with the results, but I know there's plenty of room for improvement. I was hoping for closer to 400 hp and mid 400's for torque. So far I'm thinking I kept pretty conservative with my cam and carb. But this is going in a '70 F-100 shortbed, kind of a daily drive hotrod pickup. So I'm gonna go with what I got for now and see how I like it, and do upgrades when money is available, if I think I need them. I just don't want it to get to the point where I don't drive it much cause it's not daily driver friendly.

Got the engine in the truck over the weekend (June 27-28, '09).
I went with some Flow-tech headers and a Ram Musclecar series clutch.
As I've mentioned, I went with a 2-1/2" exhaust thru glasspacks.
The results are totally bitchin'! It's definitely more power than I really need, and the sound is *****in' bad-ass! I achieved what I was going for there, so I'm pretty happy about that. I'll post some pics soon.
My first drive into town had my adrenaline going and my heart pounding.
I'm really gonna have to be on the ball, cause it's the kind of toy that could get me into trouble, quick-like!
