1953 transmission questions

Have a 1953 F-100 colume shift, 3 speed transmission, that gets hung up in neutral. Truck has very low miles, but had been sitting for 40 or more years. Question 1, is the problem likely in the trans or shifting linkage? Question 2, I have access to a 1955 F-100 transmission on a Y block, is that a direct bolt up?

Check the linkage first - there is an article here on rebuilding the linkage - Techno Source for the 1932 thru 1953 Flathead Ford

It depends what bellhousing is on the 53 that will allow an easy bolt up - with some scrounging and a little effort it can be made to happen.

Here's the same info I gave the OP when he sent me a Visitors Message:

B3C7001A .. 3 Speed Manual Transmission Assy. / Fits: 1953/55 F100.

B4C7343A .. Manual Control Selector Lever Bushing Kit / Fits: 1948/56.

The two manual control levers attach to the bottom of the steering column under the hood. The two shift rods from the trans attach to them.

The bushing used in each one of those levers is notorious for cracking apart, and when that occurs, the shaft lever binds up.

Bill,
Lost the info on the suppliers of the bushing kits, could you give them to me again?

As to hanging in Nutreal, I have had experence as the two springs on either side of the blocking ring of your third and second gear being "Weak " For some reason , that has caused my transmissions , I say thast cause I have had seveal that had that problem too
Course too, a worn Shifting fork has also been known to cause te transmission to be balky too. I hope this might help ! Ed Shaver

You'd be amazed at what you'll see if you get underneath while someone else rows through the gears! Linkages moving sideways instead of in a straight line, for example.
