As far as taking it to a shop, It's one of those "behind the scenes" type mods (like the in tank ones)that no one can see, but it's there. Without pulling the inner fender, you can't see that the IDM has been futz with. You are not trying to hide anything, just make improvements. This mod has been tested by many and is still going strong.

vanishingpnt is starting off with a positive reputation.
Does anybody know what the ohms should be at the contact points for the resistor.
In the Dieselpower article it said 75K mine is showing 43.5K

You're probably seeing circuit resistance as well lowering the number. You'll need to lift one side of the component to see its value alone.
