Excursion Rear Glass Fell Out - How to Reattach?

Fellas,

Pulling into my driveway today and the rear pane of glass just fell out of my 2003 Excursion. This is the glass that you can open with a switch on the dash - hinged, so it will open in the back to vent out hot air. Surprisingly enough, the glass didn't shatter, so I want to reattach it. The adhesive that was holding it on obviously failed.

Any ideas on how to reattach? Suppose it's some kind of heavy duty adhesive; I don't think duct tape is going to do the trick. Also, how do you hold the window in place while the adhesive cures? I'd rather not bring it to the dealer unless I have to.

Thanks!

Scott

I doubt if the dealer is the silver bullet. If you want to attach it permanently I would use contact cement. It comes in a can and you can wait until the directions says to attach it and; Done!.

The glass is installed with a 2 part epoxy. You can either take it to a glass shop to have them install it, or just see if you can purchase an epoxy kit from them. The epoxy will set in a few minutes so you will want to be ready to slide the glass in place and either hold for a few minutes or use some of the green drywall safe painters tape to hold it in place, or even electrical tape. Some will use duct tape or the red sheating tape, that will leave a residue on the body and is a pain to remove after.

If I was doing this..... I would indeed use duct tape, for it's strength. And I would let it sit overnight to
dry very well. Simple car wax, any brand, will take the residue from the duct tape off very easily.

You need the epoxy kit as wallz said or it will fall out again and next time you may not be so lucky.

The problem with the duct tape is it has a tendency to sometimes take some of the clear coat off as well when it is peeled off. I have seen it all in the last 14 or so years as a glass installer.

Headed to the dealership and then a glass place in the morning. Here's the problem - there is a molded piece of plastic that attaches to the glass - it has a female fitting in it that is partially broken - that's why the glass fell out. I'm betting that this piece is not sold separately; probably have to buy the entire piece of glass to get that. However, I think with some plastic welding and a hose clamp, I may get it to hold.

Of course, if the glass is not too expensive, I'll just buy a new one.

Thanks,

Scott

i had my pass side window fallout a month ago, all it all replacment glass was $1600 all said and done. i replaced the vent window with the fixed style window to keep this from happening again. if it happends to the drivers side i'll do the same.

BTW i attempted re-mounting the window, its not really possible to do and be sure it will hold. the window comes from ford with the mounts installed.
