Well GM is filing bankruptcy, What a shocker there. The US taxpayer gets to contribute another $30,000,000,000.00 to GM in addition to the $20,000,000,000.00 already given. Just wonderful.
Other than Canada, who is kicking in 9.5 Billion, We are getting hosed (again). Mexico is not committing any money but GM is transferring plants south of the border. Go figure.
I was up in Canada the other week and heard that Canada is going to be throwing money at GM. I don't think Mexico has any money to give, well technically neither does the US.
The part that really pisses me off is the severence package GMs people will get when/if their plants close down. 100% salary for 1 year and I believe they even get a percentage of their salary for an additional year after that. Not shure if they get healthcare on top of that yet, but they probably do.
My dad is getting closer to losing his job. He is managment and only gets 4 months of severence and hes been there for 30 years. Issurance is up to him to provide.

HEY HEY HEY, why are you complaining????? You were defending buying a toyota tacoma in the f100 board. If people were not so in love with that foreign stuff YOU & ME would not be contributing all this money. If GM, Chrysler, & Ford split the money toyo has made from us they would be in GREAT shape and the economy & unemployment rate would be in FAR better shape (including your Dad) . .

You are clueless. If Ford, GM and Chrysler didn't make crap except for the F-series (that's being generous) from around 79-mid 2000s, they would be doing much better. For example, Chrysler had to be bailed out in 79 before Toyota was a major player. So they were incompetent and are incompetent now.
Toyota employs 1000s of American workers and creates billions in US economic activity.

You got that right. The US auto industry employees a lot of people but they are only a small piece of the unemployment rate. The Japanesse companies gained incredible amounts of market share over the last 20, even ten years and their vehicles were often more expensive. If the US automakers would have looked at how to improve their products instead of trying to just find a way to make them cheaper they would be in much better shape.(The Taurus was a good example of what I mean) One of the CEOs from GM said the 90s was a low point in vehicle quality for GM.

I give up, you guys are so blind and inable to look past your nose! I could write a book here about how the foreign companies have fooled you fools into thinking the stimulus and jobs they create outweigh the sales, profits, and jobs LOST by American companies. Your right, everybody buy foreign STUFF ONLY (except the marginal f150) that will be great for the economy!
This gets really old, the racist stuff. Why is the hatred not the same for Germany?
GM died because it was a company with insular, arrogant management. Public statements by Rick Wagner, and now Fritz Henderson tell the story, "Its not our fault". I know people who worked there in engineering and told me how it really was. Screwups were not fired, but promoted.

Not doubt GM has some serious but IMO a good bit of the problems with the U.S. auto industry result from the continued bashing by the media. (The media seems to hate the large corporate giants in the U.S. such as the auto industry, oil industry, mining industry, steel industry, etc.) It's also become an elitists issue without regard to real facts. I'll never forget moving into a new neighborhood several years ago when the neighbor lady noted I only had Fords in the driveway. She said "we only buy imports". The import they had at the time was an Acura with barely 100,000 miles on it. The car was in such poor condition, they had to donate it to charity.
i know it's off topic but i must replie, i agree with (redsuperduty). i mean how could you defend the japanese car companys, dont you own a history book. this is the counrty that bomed pearl harber, this is the same country that our forfathers fought and died fighting. when i think of these car companys, thats all i can think of is the people who lost their lives to save us from them. i geuss you dont care about that stuff thou, i geuss you are fine with buying a car that these same people built and giving your hard earned money to them instead of an american comany.. talk about stabbing yourself in the back.. there is no company that builds cars to the quality that ford does, not gm, not dodge, and sertanly not toyota. there stuff is secound to none. thats why they are still in good shape, becouse people are starting to see that. so why buy a japanese car if ford makes a better product......
There is no point in buying any car if there is one you like better, is built better, and is cost competitive. That was not the case when my wife bought her 2002 Solara. It was by far the best vehicle we have ever owned. We replaced it with an 06 Explorer because it was the best buy at the time and we strongly considered Toyota. It was basicly the Explorer vs the 4Runner and Sequia.
But if you want to go with the history stuff, how can you buy from an American company? Don't you know that those are the same people that enslaved african americans? Don't you know that those are the same people that murdered Native Americans and stole thier land? Etc, etc. Everyone has a little blood on thier hands, get over it.
Japan is a totally different place than it was in the 30s and 40s, just like Germany, Vietnam, America, etc, etc. If we didn't trade with the folks that have done us wrong over the years, we probably wouldn't trade at all and nobody would trade with us.
Our forefathers stood for the belief that all people are created equal. Not Americans, not post 12-1-1941 Americans, not post 9-11-01 Americans, all people.

This stuff is really tiring, but here goes. My 83 year old Navy vet father "defected" from GM to Toyota in 1980, 1980! His 1973 Olds Cutlass ("Its not your father's Oldsmobile", remember that?) was basically falling apart at 100,000 miles, rust and mechanical problems, an acceptable lifespan for that era. In the showroom looking at a new one, parts were falling off the interior in a brand new car! He went to Toyota for quality, not price. The Supra he bought cost more, and lasted 150k without major problems. He never went back. He had bought new GM cars most of his adult life. The one Ford product was a '64 Continental, pretty, but an unreliable nightmare.
Anecdotal, yes. But dont bring up one example of one worn-out Acrua, either. Those who are using the word "Jap" and trying to invoke memories of Pearl Harbor werent around back then. My father was.
Dagnabbit. Now I have to burn my SD. (Except maybe the canadian made engine, but I have to check the history books first) I was born and raised above the mason dixin line as was my entire family. Don't know if anyone remembers the little tif we had a few years ago called The Civil War? Now I have to burn my truck because it was built in Kentucky and I bet the workers who built it profited from it. Anyone got a lighter and a gas can? I can't give those confederate SOBs my money, I need to help my Yankee brothers.
I'm shure the people who are currently holding GM bonds would rather have their money in Toyota or Honda.
Sorry to say it but, if american auto makers made vehicles that were exciting, more of us americans would buy them. GM failed because of the unions stronghold on them. GM is 2K upside down before they roll it down the assembly line. Its because of all the union benefits that are for the employed and retired assembly line workers. whichearn an average of 80K per year with everything factored in to there salary.
and although I am and always will like ford trucks better then GM, lets not forget that ford did ask for bail out money as well. theye were just refused it.
as far as buying foreign vehicles vrs domestic goes. it dosent really matter since the global economy is so intertwined. did you realize that a huge portion of domestic vehicles parts are built in canada and mexico?
sorry for getting you guys so rilled up, i just seen this post at the wrong time and kinda went crazy. thng is i turn on the tv every morning and hear about how chrysler is going to be soldout to fiat and hear how gm might not survive bankrupsy and think these companys are all this country has left. 95% of everything else is made oversea's, but we still made great cars and trucks rite here in the good old USA but now it looks like ford could be the only one left once this is done. no more big three, just one.. what if sometime in the future china or japan decided to start a fight with us , we cant see the future this could happen. what if it did, we would not be able to fight them. in WW2 it was the car companys that saved us, they built the tanks, jeeps, weapons and plains the won the war.. next time we might not even have them on our side. thanks
