Engine Hesitation

Been having a problem with my 2001 F-150 (4.6) over the last several months. My truck has a hesitation when I'm driving at a constant speed and goes away when I step on the gas.
I've changed the EGR valve, the fuel line filter, the spark plugs, and the oil. The dealer has had it several times and after almost 1000 dollars they still dont know what's wrong and i'm still having the problem.
After the fuel filter was changed it seemed to go away for a couple days but it still came back.
Help.

Welcome to FTE digace! Sounds like a bad COP that is misfiring when the engine is under a high load condition. Have the dealer run a stress test on the COPS to determine which one(s) are bad. The alternative is to buy a new set and replace them all. Good luck!

Exactly what is a COP? with 175,000 miles would it be best to go a head and replace them all anyway?

Coils on the plugs if I not mistaken. Replace the plugs and the coils is I what I think he was suggesting. I have heard some issues with doing them yourself unless you have the plug tool. Doing a search will net you a few threads about it. Not sure how much over the parts it would cost to have a tech do it or how hard it might be to do it in your own garage.

Yes, COP = coil on plug. With that many miles on the truck, it is due for at least it's second set of spark plugs. this is a good thread to read before tackling the job.

It is for Coil On Plug.

Our new Ford COP’s, the Sultans of Spark(S.O.S.), have
been designed with both durability and performance in mind.
Please see them at:
http://www.performancedistributors.com/soscoils.htm
Quality was the main feature we stressed when we went to the
drawing board on these coils.
By the way, for those of you who only need to replace a defective coil,
our SOS Coils are available separately.

4.6 Hesitation

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum.

I currently live in Germany, In the US Army. I just bought a 2003 F150 Super Crew 2X4 with 4.6 engine - 59346 miles on it. My truck is doing the same thing, hesitation at constatnt speed. It goes away when I step on the gas. I have read this thread and was wondering if it would be okay to drive the truck with the slight hesitation until I can get it fixed. The truck will only be with me until I ship the truck back to the states at the end of the month. I will be getting it serviced as soon as get back in Septmber 2009.

Any help would be great, Thanks. Mark

Welcome to FTE crookm11! Thanks for serving all of us civilians. Driving the truck this way, won't hurt anything, just annoy you to death. Good luck!
