Stu, I don't know if I sent you any pictures I took of this 48 Woodie M-H that lives about 5 miles from me. The car only has 9 k original miles and a good story of how it was used here by the owners dad to sell Indiana Dunes real estate back then. I need to figure out how to add pictures here. Mark
The guy's name is Bruce Ayres, from Gary, IN.; he sent me some prints a few years ago. That car has some very nice birdseye maple! And notice the 2 sets of leaf springs - regular semi-elliptic below, and quarter-elliptic on top; these were to ease torque-steer when the front axle was driving. The front drive shaft is removed - probably to save wear on the transfer case. Some M-Hs had a full-time transfer case with no shifter. This one (I think), and mine, has a "compensator" function: push the t-case shifter forward, and the front wheels drive as long as you're going straight and free-wheel in turns, so you can drive on pavement without locking up the drivetrain and possibly breaking something. In loose traction situations you'd pull back on the shifter to lock the front & rear drive axles. My drive shaft is still on, but that compensator deal has been removed from the t-case, so there's still something spinning in there without the stress of actually driving the wheels.
Here's some shots of another '48 (with a '42 dash) that was for sale a couple of years ago at Nick Alexander's meet (not Nick's car, though) - haven't seen it since...looks like a great starting point for a beautiful wagon! - Dave
Looks like the front drive shaft is there, just disconnected. Maybe being serviced. Both Mark's and my F-1s have the same combo of semi and quarter-elliptic front springs as well as the compensating function on the transfer cases.
What happened to your pics?

I thought the guys name that I talked to was Gene Ayers, anyway, I got a lot of pictures of the underneath while it was on the rack, if anybody needs them. Also !!! I put My 1952 Ranger body on the chassis a couple of days ago, starting to finish!
That's great Mark. You're gonna be done before I start!! I'll have the F-3 going back together though now that I've got the drive train back from Chuck so that counts I guess. I can post a pic, or a few, of your chassis if you want. I've got several in my photobucket file.
Dave, pics show up perfect now. Wonder what the reason was that they didn't show up before.
