2008 blows some soot when floored... Is that OK?????

My buddy just checked out a used 2008 Job 1 truck that is for sale by his house. He said everything was great except that the tailpipe was somewhat sooty and it blew a little black smoke when stomped from a dead stop.

He said it didn't dump smoke as bad as my 7.3 will, but it was noticeable.

Does that mean the DPF is not working? The truck checked out fine except for that. I thought I read where the tailpipe should be clean and it shouldn't smoke. Is that right?

Also, should you be able to spin the tires from a dead stop with just flooring it, or does the "electronic" turbo lag not allow that to happen??? It's an F350 C/Cab, SRW, 4x4, longbed.

There should be near zero soot and tailpipe should be clean. No burning tires from stop unless you powerbrake it which is not good for tranny.

Thanks. Would you let the soot in the pipe keep you from purchasing it?

Other than that the truck is perfect...

I would consider a purchase IF the warranty still has miles on it. Best thing to do would be to go to a dealer and have it thoroughly checked out. DPF and exhaust issues have been worked out, lots of other threads on the subject, and if the truck can't be passed up it's not like it's a piece of junk.

I just sent my son over to the truck and told him to rub the inside of the tailpipe with his finger. (He knows I'm crazy) There is some residue, not enough to phase a 7 year old though. I have driven over 4,000 miles since May 12 and have 91,500 on the odo. All miles with a 8,000 or heavier trailer. Never have I actually seen anything like smoke being spewed out since the new PCM flash last year.

I would say get it checked out by the dealer. Probably no codes but basically like Ruschejj said, pipe should only have a haze on it.

Might be sensors or something possible DPF but most likey some other cause.

Mine will burn a little rubber but most won't there is usually a slight lag from a stop. Mostly because of the emissions stuff, also it is designed to help protect the trans. in my opinion.

The truck only has 49,000 miles on it. What warranty would cover the DPF?

Thanks senix, I'll check that out to see what is still covered on the truck.

I just talked to the bank and they lowered the rate on my loan so the truck is pretty much mine. Just gotta put the dealer in touch with the bank on Monday to seal the deal. Then fly to Dallas on Tues night or Wed AM to sign papers and drive it home...

Yeah, it's not a bad deal considering I'm saving almost $20K off the cost of a new 2009 model truck.

Here's the link to the truck.

I would not worry with soot in the pipe. Based on feedback from this site and my evaluations of new super dutys on the road i would say at least 25% of them have sooty pipes as they get some miles. My service manager said they see about a 50/50 split between clean to dirty. Now that being said many are clean like my friend has about 50K on his with no soot. I'm still curious as to what causes this but do know many of these trucks do allow some soot by the DPF.

Thanks. It doesn't bothe rme that much since it's just related to the DPF. Now if it's sooty because it regens all the time then I'll be ticked. I'll end up leaving it alone till 100K anyway then start messing with it.
