Hey guys, this is my first post. I've been a member for a while now and frequently find all of my questions answered on this site if I just search around, but this time I can't really find any good information on previous posts. I just blew my tranny and clutch in my 1999 F250 SD 5 speed manual with the 5.4 in it, so I figured now would be a good time to replace it with a 351w that I got cheap out of an 82 Ford 250. Does anyone have any info about how this swap would go down (i.e. personal experience or a link to some info)? I just want to make sure I get all my ducks in a row before I start trying to do anything, as I am in no way a master mechanic. Thanks for any responses and thank you guys for posting so much useful information before that I have gotten.
You'll be up against it with that swap, the engine it totally different and will require a lot of fabrication to mount and connect. It won't bolt to the exiting engine mounts or the existing tranny and won't run on the existing electronics, so it's about as difficult a project as there is. It's also has much lower output in stock form and would require some upgrades just to match what the 5.4 produces. It would be FAR far easier to just get another tranny for your truck and leave everything else alone.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I plan on hopefully having the tranny rebuilt for a short time and in the mean time putting that 351w on a stand and putting performance parts on it as the paycheck allows. That way by the time I put it in there it's already bored and stroke, with all the new lickys and chewys on there. I just wanted to figure out what kinda match I'm up against when I do put the 351 in there.
also i would double check that the motor you have is a windsor and not a 351m. that year F250 it was way more common to have the 351m. the 351w was mostly in the half ton vehicles in those years and rarly used in a 3/4-1ton truck. if it is the M i would sell it before you dump any cash into that thing.
i would make sure you id the motor first. the 351m is alot bigger then a 351w. i know you can tell by the valve cover bolts also but i cant remember the count.
I ran the numbers I got off the motor through a rep at Ford, thy said it was a Windsor, appreciate the concern though. Would have never known about the 351m being in the 3/4 tons back then.
They were still putting the 351M in some half tons in the early '90s, weren't they? Several years ago I almost bought a '90s F-150 (wanna say a '93, but not sure) with a 351M in it. I wasn't impressed when I test drove it.

No, they weren't. The last year the 351m was put in a vehicle was 1982.

If it really did have a 351m (which I seriously doubt), it wasn't original. If it had EFI, then it was a 351w for sure as that's the only 351 that ever had EFI.

Hmm. I never did look under the hood of that thing. The guy said it had a 351M, and I don't think it was an '82. Of course, I never did bother to try to verify any of his info because I didn't like the truck.
