trans. rear seal?

2002 f150 screw fx4 5.4
(not sure about the trans sorry)

there is a noticeable leak in the rear of the transmission. From what I can see it is coming out where the drive shaft yolk meets the output shaft of the trans. I also suspect that there may be a leak in the trans to transfer case area.

any help with this please? heard this one could be a bit of tough one to replace.

Well, the leak where the drive shaft goes into the t-case is easy. Just pull the drive shaft out, you will need a 12mm 12point socket and is easiest with a swivel. Just use a large screwdriver or a seal puller to pull out the seal coming out of the tail housing and carefully tap in a new one. For your other leak, the t-case will have to come out and there is a this paper-like seal that is in between there that needs to be replaced. While you are under there, you have a good excuse to replace the t-case fluid as well as the transmission fluid depending on how long it has been. Let us know how it turns out and good luck!!

By the way, your trans is a 4r70w.

thanks. the leak isn't that bad i just notice that the rear of the trans has a wet look and so does the tcase. i just changed the transfer case fluid and the trans fluid has been about a year since we put in a transgo shift kit. it doesn't leave a drop on the cement but i'm sure that it is bound to go soon just like my ball joints just did.

thanks for your reply.

You either have the 4r100 or the 4r70w.

Well the E4OD is quite a bit larger than the 4R70W, it was also used behind the 7.3 Powerstrokes. Also the 4R100 is basically the same as the E4OD, I believe after 99 or 2000 they changed the name to 4R100.

The 4R70w oil pan is basically square and the E4OD/4R100 looks like this

ok thanks, i have to get an alignment after spending the whole day doing ball joints (first side a good 7 hours) the other (3 hours).

going to fords to have it done have them check the trans because they flushed the tranny last time and i checked it cold and the fluid is all the way up to the top of the do not add part, which i think was a sign of why it's seeping out the back.
