1978 F-150 Transmission issues!!!!!

First, of all I am new to this forum, so thanks for having me. I look forward to all of your wisdom!

I am in the process of changing out the tranny in my truck. It was bad when I got it, but they gave me a tranny with the purchase. When I got the tranny out I noticed the tail section of the two were different. I took the tail section off the tranny that is going back into the truck with no problems. I tried to take the tail section off the old one to put it on the new tranny and the shaft will not come out of the back. the housing came off but the shaft section where the drive shaft slides into will not come out. Is there a special way to get this out of there? If pics will help please let me know. Thanks for the help!

Welcome to FTE.

What kind of trans? What engine? Trans model? 4x4 or 4x2? Did one come from a 4x4 and the other a 4x2?

More info, more answers.

Some transmissions can not swap tail shaft housings without complete teardown. (C6).

Sorry about that! Guess that information would be needed huh!

The motor is a 302, auto tranny, I am not sure if its a C4 or a C5, My truck is a 2wd and I am not sure what the other tranny came out of. When I bought the truck it came with it. The bell housing is able to be removed (on both) so I was told its a C4, but I am not sure. I can get some pics tommorow is needed.

The trans has to come completely apart to remove the shaft, so you might as well just rebuild the one you have. Don't forget to flush the cooler lines, you don't want that old burned up oil thats left in there going right back into your new rebuild.

I did some calling around for a price for a shop to do a rebuild and the cheapest I found was $450. I am a pretty mechanical guy and I would try to do it myself, but I really dont know anything about transmissions. Honestly, how hard is it to do a tranny rebuild on your own? Is there a lot of specialty tools needed? What would a rebuild kit run?

Some folks here charge into E4ODs etc without fear. I saw a guy pull a C4 apart one time and that was enough for me. If you have a lot of time and are good at researching and getting the manuals/instructions, AND you know how to look at a part and determine if it stays or goes, then have at it. Otherwise, $450 sounds good.....

$900 and change here for a slightly beefed one:

TCI Auto: C4 SizzlerŽ Transmission 70-82 Case-fill

Parts and kits is dirt cheap:

Ford RWD Transmissions C-4, C-5 Transmission Parts Makco Transmission Parts

Thanks for the information. I do have another question. I found a transmission out of a 88 e-150 van. Its a C4 with 118K miles and is hooked up to a 302 which is what I have. Does anyone know of any reason why this would not work in my 1978 F-150?

OK here are some pics of the issue I am having.

This is the tranny that came out of my truck C4 with only reverse:

This is the shaft that I am not able to get out of the transmission:

This is the tranny that is "good" C4 also:

This is the tail section that came off of the "good" tranny. It came out with no problems.

Does anyone know how to get that shaft out of the rear part of the old tranny? If so please enlighten me. Or if you have any other questions please let me know. Thanks!

There is a snap ring on some of the autos that hold the output shaft in. It is needed on your old trans because the driveline has a slipjoint into the extension housing while on your new good trans, the yoke holds it in. It is fairly easy to remove the front pump and then the gust of the trans to get to the snap ring. Believe it or not, but the manual I liked best when rebuilding my c6 was the Haynes manual, and it covers all ford autos. Then all you need is a front pump gasket and a good set of flat-tipped internal snap ring pliers, and an hour or so to change output shafts.
