Hypermax Cowl Induction

So the UPS guy delivered some parts love today. After an hour in the garage I had the Hypermax Cowl Induction installed. I was expecting to get:

1) more turbo noise

2) possibly lower EGT

3) maybe better mileage

After a test drive I can report on the first 2.

This is significantly louder, with lots of turbo, air sounds. Maybe more air sound than I like. Sorta sounds like the engine is going to suck you up. I have not decided if I like it or not. I probably will as long as my wife does not complain about it.

The EGT is about the same, so far.

I'll report more as I have more to report.

Right above the brake booster behind the master cylinder, through the firewall.

Yes, please do post a picture - I'd love to run my intake that way, as where the inlet is right now it sucks warm engine air, and I don't really like any home-made cold-air intakes I've seen so far...

It's pretty dark out now. I'll take some pictures tomorrow if I have time.

One thing I can't overstate is how much different this makes the truck sound. I was expecting more turbo whine, and I certainly have that. But I was not expecting the massive amount of moving air sound as the RPMs increase. Seriously, when I first test drove the truck I thought it was going to suck me into the turbo from the driver's seat.

At 3000 RPM you cannot talk over it. At 1500 RPM the turbo whine is an uncomfortable drone. For short trips I can live with it. Towing a trailer more than an hour would drive me nuts the way this sounds. With the windows rolled down the air sound of the intake is not noticeable. With the window's rolled up at 1800 RPM/60 mph it is very noticeable. Not so loud you can't talk over it, but not quiet, and not a pleasant sound like a nice exhaust.

As far as EGT goes, it seems to work about as well as the factory IDI Turbo cold air intake that routes over the driver's side battery.

This might not last very long on my truck.

My biggest problem with that setup is if a drain stops up, rain water will be going into the air filter, turbo, intake and cylinders.

If you went to start and engine with a cylinder full of water, could be very expensive damage like a broken crank or bent/broke connecting rod.

I don't like hood scoops on a diesel for the same reason.

I'm a little late in posting this, but better late than never I suppose. I loaded pics of the Hypermax Cowl Induction installed on my truck in the following album:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...p?albumid=4096

Innitally I didn't like the setup. It was a big change in terms of how much noise you hear in the cab. That is probably the biggest difference over the stock IDI Turbo cold air intake. After driving it a while I think it flows a bit better than the factory setup, and I'm not bothered by the noise so much except at WOT, when it sounds like it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. If you are DYING to hear your turbo wine, this is THE part you have been waiting for. If you are looking for something that will add gobs of HP, not so much.

I think I'm going to make a fitting so I can run both the Hypermax setup AND the factor cold air intake. I figure that should help reduce the sucking sound.

Do you have any before pics? I have no clue if my setup is similar to stock but only know that it is a sliver of an opening where it sits between the hood and top of the front grill.

I have a parts truck with the scoop going back like that, it does look like it would work pretty good on the rad mount like Dave and some of the rest of us have done...

That is about the same setup I made for mine. I was gonna use the ac box but found it wouldn't work. I put mine further toward the fender. I noticed an increase in milage but as it is non turbo I don't hear the noise lol. I used heating vent and flexible 4" round duct for mine. As far as water goes I regulary check my cowl drains to keep them clean. I had a 68 mustang in high school that the cowl rusted out on due to plugged drains and I have checked them on all the vehicles i have had since. I have also driven my truck in some down pours that you couldn't see in and have had no problems as of yet.

How much did that cost you? I assume you had to cut a hole in your firewall to mount it?

It was $90 delivered. I did have to cut a hole in the firewall into the cowl to install it.

I got it from www.gohypermax.com

It's a little cheaper than that now, I may have to give it a try.
