Early on I changed oil according to the Ford manual at 7,500 miles. I take an oil sample each change and send it to the lab for analysis. After adding the bypass filter I change around every 15,000 miles.

Why wouldnt Shell Rotella T Syntetic or for that matter Chevron Delo 400 also go 15,000 miles with a bypass filter at one half to one third the price of Amsoil? ULSD fuel should make the oil last longer by itself, because ultra low sulfur means a lot less acid in the oil from blowby, meaning less TBN depletion. UOA's are necessary, but you should be doing that anyway, not just with Amsoil.

I would expect you could get the same mileage, maybe even better, out of Shell or Chevron synthetics with a bypass filter. Oil sampling will help determine that. I became an Amsoil dealer and sell to no one but myself. This significantly reduces the price off of retail. I have used Amsoil for years in all my farm equipment, both gas and diesel, and it really stands up to high heat and cold temperatures. I can hear and feel the difference in my hydraulics when it is cold, below 0, when using Amsoil synthetics versus other premium synthetics. My truck is a 6.0 liter Ford diesel that uses high oil pressure to fire the fuel injectors. The lab reports came back favorable on the sheering compared to other reports I have seen posted using other premium oils. All in all I think any premium oil a person is comfortable with and gets good results with is a good oil for them.

Amsoil

dschuffert,
Thanks for the info about amsoil. I just purchased my first PSD, 05 Lariet 4x4 with 112,000 miles on it. I purchased the truck from a good friend of mine. Its an AWESOME vehicle to have and is in great shape, you can still smell the "new". I have been doing a lot of research on longevity for these vehicles. And Amsoil synthetic oil keeps popping up. Do you think I would have any problem switching, given the truck already has 112k miles on it? The truck has had Shell Rotella in it since day 1. No problems yet, just want the long term benefit. I have no plans of trading or getting a new one anytime soon. Thanks for any input.

Shell Rotella-T 5W-40 will last many miles, too. If Shell has kept it trouble free, I'd keep it in there.
