Where to buy Lightning crate engine?
If you are thinking about getting that motor, don't neglect your tranny. Ford uses the diesel tranny internals for a reason, 440lb-ft of torque can be hard on the gearbox. If I were you, and going to drop in the 5.4L SC motor, then I would take your tranny to a reputable tranny shop and have them modify the internals and install all the important bits from the stronger transmission.
Also, ford is supposed to bump the power output up next year to 385 hp (supposedly) you might wanna wait till then to make a purchase.
Also, I don't know what all you think makes up a crate motor, but I would expect a new lightning motor w/heads, blower, and the intake unique to it would run a pretty penny, at least 4 to 5 thousand. You might want to start lookin for a salvage one, as I am sure some have been wrecked with low miles on it.

Where to buy Lightning crate engine?
A few questions about the F150, by the name I use here I'm sure you can guess what my truck is (1998 F150 XLT STX). It came with the 4.2L V6, which in all aspects does amazingly for a V6, but it lacks the power I want and need, to tow my show car with. I've saved up almost enough to buy a 5.4L Lighting crate motor. My questions are :
Is it worth it?
Will it takes me all of god knows how long to swap the motor?
Where would I find a computer for it and last but not least
how much of the wiring will I need to re-run or replace during the swap?
any help anybody can give is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Josh

You must like doing things the hard way or have a whole bunch of free time. Let's see, you have a F150 V6 and you want to drop a SC 5.4 in it? Money for motor @$4K, tranny upgrade (unknown), I'll guess a cool grand (to have it done right, maybe two). Upgrade fuel pumps, (guessing here again), <500. Time, wiring, and computer..... Do you think it could be easier(and about the same amount of money you would NEED to spend) to get a used Lightning or a used truck with the 5.4 in it? You would be driving them alot sooner and easier. Besides, what happens when you try and sell your creation? Do I want to buy a former V6 1/2 ton that has been converted to a SC 5.4? I would have to drink a whole lot before putting up money for it. And we haven't even discussed upgrading your tires to handle what you are trying to put down to the ground

Where to buy Lightning crate engine?
I do sometimes prefer doing things the hard way, I would buy a used lighting except I love the truck I have and want to use it with the SC 5.4. The time and work it involves are no object, the time I have and the work I love. About the tires, its already got 17x7 factory wheels with goodyear eagle gt II's (p275/60R17) on it, so I dont see those as being a problem. The tranny and back is being completely replaced with a Richmond 6 speed, centerforce dual friction clutch, carbon driveshaft, and a set of 3.73 posi gears

LAST EDITED ON 28-Feb-01 AT 04:26 AM (EST)[p] Anderson Ford in Clinton, Illinois (Illinois #1 SVT Dealer) currently has 4 or 5 of the S/C 5.4 crate motor. I think they were about $6000 - and worth every penney.
