Question Why did my tranny casing break?

Truck- 1999 f250 v10 5 speed 4x4
What happened - Was driving back home from colorado (1000+miles) got some bad vibrations around 70mph. checked driveline,ujoints... everything was tight.(replaced all ujoints and had driveline rebalanced 5000 miles ago.) drove around 60 the rest of the way and vibration was much less but still a little noticeable. 10 miles from home started to accelerate at a light and the truck went bang, (metal braking) and I lost power to the wheels. towed it home.
Aftermath- The casing broke all the way around where the transmission mounts up to the transfer case, right where transmission shaft goes into transfer. Took tranfer case out and it seems fine, spins freely, no scary noises. Nothing seems wrong with the tranny either. Since the transfer is out I can put it in any gear while running and the shaft spins fine, has no marks or dings and again no scary noises.
What could've caused it to break?
Should I just replace the casing and make sure everything is put together correctly or should I take it to a tranny shop for further investigation?
What would be the best way to find that casing?

Let me know if any more info would be helpful.
Thanks for any info

I'd ask your Ford dealer when you order your new one, maby they have seen this before. Were the bolts good and tight ?

i've seen it happen a couple of times before in my dealer years, it occurs when the t-case bolts start to work loose form the tranny adapter.
