Ford electronic voltage regulator

HI Guys,

On the above regulator the connections are marked I A S F
The question is, where does the wire that connects to I come from,
or, in other words, what does the wire from connection I connect to?
This is in a 1956 F-100 with an ENOS fuse box. Any info very much appreciated. Thanks

Gary

Wow is this site screwed up today!

I posted a picture and the wrong one popped up. Now I can't edit off.

The "I" terminal is used to route to the indicator light. In some systems it has an resistor connected in line to act as an exciter for certain alternators.

Here are two drawings of the hook ups as you will probably need them:

Looks ok now- I got it to delete.

Good luck!

Thanks Julie,

The `84 Mercury diagram is the third different hook-up place I have been
told to connect it to. Other two have been the acc. on ignition key and
coil connection on fuse box. Your diagram of `51 Ford truck seems to be
missing the " I " wire. Maybe not needed on `51`s. Thanks for info.
I think I need some more info to back up which of the three I have to
connect the "I" wire to.

Nothing connects to the I terminal its empty not needed. I've used this hook up for 9 years never had a prob. My truck is a 53 w/ a 56 wire harness. A and S wire off of the regulator are connected together and go to the ign. switch to the key on post. you also have a condenser can that attaches to the A terminal too, this just attaches to the inner fender. You only have two wires going to the Alt the battery + from the starter selenoid to the battery side of the alt. and the feild wire from the reg to the alt. 2 wires only. I used the charging harness from a 73 Ford f-100 Works great! If you have any other ? let me know.

Yeah, everyone is right, it depends on the specific alternator. Gary, page through the link I posted and there are some alternatives. With th ebasic system we usually have in converting from generator to alternator, the I wire would in fact if used at all with a charge light, end up in the acc terminal of the Ign switch - that one config. In that config, the light also acted as the resistro that excited that "era" of alternator. It's hard to say not knowing what alternator you have. And unfortunately, instructions that come with regulators and alternators usually just say to put the wires back where they were with the old ones.

I would install your alternator and regulator without the I wire, and check for it to charge. If it does, you should be good. If not I'd run the wire through the BATT idiot light and to the ACC side of the Ign Switch

Sorry to be so wishy washy, but it's one of those evolutionary things.

I think the config 8bahead is talking about is this one (just to add a third diagram):

I sure wish I could talk everyone into calling up "Tuff Stuff" and buying "One Wire" alternators.
