Updating Early 99 to Later 7.3 turbo

I have already ordered the parts for the conversion but i was wondering if i will notice a difference with the later model turbo or should i go with a Ball Bearing? The turbo is a later model with a 1.0 a/r ats exhaust housing.

Depends on what you want to do with the truck. You aren't going to notice much benefit by swapping to the late model stock turbo, but it opens the door for better turbos down the road. The 1.0 housing is a nice option to have though!

You'll probably notice slightly lower EGT's on the top end, but more turbo lag on the bottom end.

Overall, it's an expensive upgrade to keep relatively the same stock performance. I personally wouldn't have chosen to go that route.

It all depends on what you are looking for out of it. You will get more mid to top end pull at speed with the later turbo.

I am trying to decide what to do as well. I have been thinking abount the D66 and keeping my early turbo setup, and adding an adrenaline HPOP. I think this setup would yield better performance. Quicker spool up and same power as the late 99+ setup, with same egt's.

I think going to a 17* HPOP would make a bigger difference. Are you going to change to the 17* from your 15* HPOP pump?

HPOP and IDM mod will give you more power then the turbo swap..go with D66 for now...when i did my swap i got cooler EGT's and a very little gain up top..the D66 was new at the time and i needed a turbo bad...found a guy going to H2E on his 01..i bought everything i needed from him to do the swap for $600 ..that was with the turbo...if i was to do it again id go with the D66..there are a lot of good post on that turbo...

Well i went with the stocker for now beings money is a factor, but i feel that having the later model goodies will benefit me down the road. Im running the edge evo II for now but hoping to get a dp when the pocket book allows. And maybe a ball bearing

Something tells me you are in for a ride here. Take your time and get the supporting mods before the DP. PMS is hell.

I have done a few mods that will help support the DP i hope. 4" exhaust, 6637, had the tranny built with shift kit and billet convertor. I just wanted to upgrade since my turbo is bad! I hope that i see some performance gains from the later model set-up compared to the Early 99 stuff.

Early 99 to late model conversion

When you swap out the turbo you should swap out the small 2" intakes for the later model 3" ones. 99.5 and later had the bigger intakes under the intake manifold

You don't have a choice with a late style turbo.

I gotta question- lets say not looking at the cost of new plenums, spider, and IH bellowed up pipes to convert to a 99.5 turbo set up, if one could get a D66 or a GTP38R for the same price, what would be a better way to go??

GTP38R hands down...alot better turbo....cost wise for the early bird... the D66 is a good deal as well...
