Tow/Haul - Engage At Stop Or On The Fly

I recently purchased a 2006 F250 PSD and will be taking my first trip this weekend with a 16' gooseneck trailer in tow. Although the roads I will be traveling are mostly flat I plan to use Tow/Haul mode. I do have a question regarding engaging and disengaging which doesn't seem to be addressed in the owner's manual. Can Tow/Haul be engaged while the truck is in motion or should it be engaged at a stop? If in motion is OK are there any recommendations regarding a maximum speed, etc.? The main reason I ask is since it automatically disengages when the truck is turned off, I can foresee at some point forgetting to press the button after stopping for fuel or some other reason.

Thanks for any input.

Greg

You can engage the tow/haul mode anytime.

I love tow haul, but I have a problem with it sometimes when I stop, like going thru a town and stopping at a stop light. As the truck slows down from braking and the tow/haul retradation everything goes OK, but just before the truck stops or sometimes when starting going again I get a big clunk. I assumed it was tow haul putting it in some gear at the last moment or something. Anyway, now when I am below ten miles an hour coming to a stop I click it out of tow/haul and then click it back on before moving again.

Anyone else experienced this?

I use tow/haul mode on demand while I am moving. On a relatively flat highway I turn it off while the truck is moving. Going through towns or hilly terrain I turn it on while the truck is moving, no issues.

I don't think you need to put it tow/haul unless the trans. is shifting alot or "hunting".

As said above ,push the button any time.

Just curious,do you have the IBC (integrated brake controller)as well ?

I really like mine for towing.

Yes I do have the integrated brake controller and will be hooking up the wiring for a gooseneck hitch and trying it out for the first time later this week.

Thanks for the info.

BEFORE it clunks into the gear does it sound like something is spinning faster and faster in the transmission then finally it "clunks" real hard into a gear? Regardless, this is not normal.

FYI, some friendly advice, give your self some extra time before your trip to make sure your truck and trailer work before you leave.

I have read alot of posts dealing w/ trailer lights, brakes etc w/ the IBC.

Sometimes (especially buying used) there may be minor issues.

No I don't hear any unusual noise from the transmission. The first time it happened I thought it was a brake grabbing. My Ford garage could not find anything wrong. I know it has to do with something in the tow haul system or programming as it only occurs with towhaol engaged when we come to a full stop.

I use TOW/HAUL to help control my EGTs. I have noticed that the EGTs drop significantly when I engage TH. I tow a boat and trailer weighing about 6-7K, I can be heading uphill, hit the TH, the tranny downshifts and the EGTs drop nicely while I climb the hill. Really nice feature but wish Ford didn't retard the funtion from '04. My old '04 the TH would downshift on every gear, kind of nice to slow down a heavy load easily.

No, there isn't a way to do that. Someone could probably write custom software to do it.

Tow/Haul when hooked to a trailer

The IBC already detects when you have a trailer with electric (or electric over hydraulic) brakes connected.

Seems to me one could design a circuit that would look at the IBC and if it sees a trailer, it could then send the signal to the transmission controller and turn on the tow/haul mode automagically.

For the OP, I usually turn on Tow/Haul as soon as I start the truck when I am towing. If I forget, I turn it on as soon as I realize I forgot - 30 mph or 60 mph, it doesn't matter. I'd use it when towing because that's when you get the engine braking feature to work as well.
