Transmission Temperature Gauge In A 4R75E Transmission?
Sorry for adding to the post population when there is already a current trans temp thread, but I'm planning on adding a transmission temperature gauge to my 2008 XL F150.
Configuration is V-6, automatic (which I think is a 4R75E), 3.55 unlimited slip differential, regular cab, 6-1/2 foot bed, 126-inch wheelbase, A/C, and no other options. Truck will have about 8500 miles on it at the time of this trip.
Tow load will be an 18 foot boat for a 400-mile trip with hills and grades along the way, 2" ball, four-pin wiring. I don't even need to install the 7-pin wiring yet. The bumper should be good for the weight.
My gross combined weight limit is 10,000 pounds, and I'll weigh everything before setting off, so I will be within the vehicle limits. It did not come with a tow package, so it has the 8.8 axle, no hitch, regular size radiator, and no transmission cooler. (Before anyone tells me I should have gotten the tow package...the tow package for a V6 never included a transmission cooler - check the brochures. So, it would be good advice if I'd gotten a V8, but I frankly don't need one. 5.4s get the 4R100 transmission, too.)
"You can't manage it if you can't measure it." So, I plan on installing a transmission temperature gauge. (I have a ScanGauge I, which will report engine coolant temps but it doesn't report trans temperature. This may be a V6 thing. In any event, I don't want a tuner.)
So, has anyone mounted one of these in the 4R75E? I've heard that there is an inspection port...can anyone tell me how to find it if I crawl under the truck from the driver's side? If I use the inspection port, will fluid come out when I open it? If I drive one side of the truck up on ramps, will that tilt it enough to avoid spillage? (My condo association is wishy-washy about working on vehicles in the driveway, but if I spill any fluids, I'll hear about it! )
Sorry for being pedantic in these questions, but I'm trying to avoid a trip to the dealer and probably a two-hour minimum charge for a fifteen minute job. If I have to pipe the sensor in to the trans fluid cooling lines, I'll have to go to the dealer for that anyway. (I'll run the wiring and everything else myself in any event.)
you are going to get a little bit of fluid, but if you are quick, it shouldn't be an issue
and I really like your idea of the ramps...but I'd think that parking the drives side on a curb would be easier, and probably sufficient
bumper is only rated for 5,000 lbs. this boat, it a Bass Boat or similar?
Also, given any thought to just installing a trans cooler? You can get the OEM setup for cheap, and it will also help your Tranny life longterm with the cooler temps
might also want to dig through a junkyard. look for a 2006+ XLT Supercrew with a 4.6 motor. The Fender Badge will say "XLT Triton" on it. Then just source that trans cooler and the lines from it.
there are other F-150's with the cooler, but you are 99% guaranteed to find one on these trucks
All that stuff will bolt directly onto your truck. You have the same tranny as the 4.6 guys. I cannot see this being more than $100 total at a Wrecking Yard.
and if you are lucky, that source truck might also have the Class IV hitch that you can grab as well. Never hurts to have a reciever, and they look good IMO

Good to hear the voice of experience.

That would work, too, but then the city could get involved...

Yes, it's pretty light. I will get the actual weight real soon now, but it was towed with a class 2 receiver on a minivan before.

My prior F150 was a 4.6 and I'm familiar with the layout. However, the stock trans cooler came from the radiator in the 4.6. The 4.2 has a smaller radiator and I don't see any place for a trans cooler connection. I may have missed it, but it's not in the same place as it was on the 4.6 if my memory has not completely failed me.
The other flaw in this thinking is that the primary reason trucks go to junkyards is a front end collision. And the first thing to go after the bumper is the trans cooler.

Actually, I already have a receiver from a red 2006 SuperCrew at the junkyard. Going off topic a little bit here. Front end was almost completely gone on that one, almost looked like a train had hit the driver's side front fender. The junkyard had an identical red 2006 SuperCrew, lifted with 35-inch tires, which had been totalled by the insurance company due to a fire in the interior. Their evil plan was to do an interiorectomy from the crashed F150 to the burned F150 (Both were tan). It would be a nice ride if they finish it.
So, thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping to get away with just doing the trans temp gauge, but I will be doing some heavier towing later and the cooler is definitely in the long-range plans. I also want to get a differential temperature gauge...install the receiver hitch and 7-pin wiring...and add air bags if I need them...but the trans gauge is my top priority right now.
Someone defined the game of golf as trying to hit a small white ball into a distant hole using implements completely unsuited to the purpose. I don't play golf, but I am trying to tow with a V6 F150...

Cheers,
it ain't that bad. I had a 98 reg cab XL with longbed 4x4. It had the 4.2 V-6 + 5 speed manual
couldn't tow in Overdrive at all, and 4th was a chore...but the truck handled it all pretty easily. You knew it was a V-6, but at no time did I feel it wasn't capable. I was quite happy with it...especially as my family only paid $15k I think in 1997 for it brand new.
we used it for construction. truck pulled trailers and hauled construction equipment all up and down the I-35 corridor for a while.
your motor is rated to 202 HP...and the V-8 from previous models is only 220 HP...and the even earlier generation was 225 HP. shouldn't be a big deal IMO
Hank, did you ever find out where the temperature sensor would mount on your 4R75E Transmission? Is there indeed an inspection port as you were thinking? Did you get the job done? I would like to put one on my 06 Code Q "4R75E" transmission and I just wanted to ask someone who has done this before I get into a can of worms. Also, what brand of gage did you decide upon and what display mount did you intend to use?
Thanks in advance

Still researching the mount. I'm sure it's simple but I've got to get some jack stands and go underneath to finish the location research. I've been told it's on the passenger side and is a black nut. Catalytic converter is in the way, so I can't even see it. This would be a great application for one of those Milwaukee See Snakes (I think that's the name), but I don't want to pop $200+ for one.
Gauge will probably be an Autometer, electrical. I haven't seen a full sweep electrical. Mechanical would be better, but running that in my preferred configuration isn't appealing.
Mount is an Autometer A-pillar pod, sourced from someone on the list whose name you would recognize
I'll post stuff when I get everything lined up, but that looks to be at least two or three weekends away.
Get a Gryphon...it will alow you to display the TFT along with about 20 other things.
I can't find the Gryphon web site after a brief search, but the Edge does not work with the 4.2L V6. And the Edge is about ten times more expensive than a basic trans temp gauge.
I may be mistaken but doesn't the 4.2L V6 F150 have the 4R70E transmission? (I am not sure if there are differences between the two other than upgrades) but, I dont want you to be researching the wrong things. I believe that the following transmissions are used on our trucks respecitvely.
F150 4.2/4.6 = 4R70E
F150 5.4 = 4R75E
I hope I am not mistaken...but this should be the respective transmissions for the various engines.
06King Ranch.....As for the gryphon or the edge...the 4.2L V6 is not supported.
Hope this information can be of help.

I had the Edge at one time in my 07F150(5.4/3:73's), mainly to monitor the trans temp when towing.
Way too hot when mountain terrain towing.
Now I am looking at installing the Ford V10 trans cooloer in place of my F150 trans cooler(I had a V10 and the trans cooler in it did the job) but can't find the part number, I was told it is the same trans cooler now in the 09F150 with the towing pkg upgrade.
Then I'll install a Trans temp gauge to monitor the trans temps.

How did the edge do for monitoring trans temp and other functions that is what I wanted todo I did not want to change the tunes?????
It did great but a bit expensive for just using the Edge to monitor the Temps.
It also reads all of the other temps.
My tranny was reading 265 when towing over a Mountain Pass here.
