360 Gas Mileage ?

Has anyone done a gas mileage check on their F250 2wd 4 speed 360? Never had a 360 powered Effie but have the chance to pick up a decent project truck to restore as a tow truck for my small travel trailer. Seems to me those that had 360's back in the day complained about poor mileage and lack of power. Anybody do an interesting engine swap in this configuration? Leaning towards 4.9EFI (like the economy and torque) or possibly 4BT (don't like the way 4BT prices have skyrocketed or the steering interference issues) if the 360 isn't up to it or is gas hog.

depends on what gears you are running as well as tires but i would expect 9-12 highway, that could even be a little generous.

My 76 F150 got about 11-12 mpg highway with 360, 4speed, 3.50 rear. Had plenty of power for towing..

I'd say 8-10mpg w/4.11's and 33's.

Yeah, the mpg you guys are quoting are a little higher than I was expecting-good news but still a little room for improvement. Please keep the replies coming.

8-10 on 33s with 410s sounds about right. 4spd too.

jeez guys, mine is so dang wore out it hardly holds 10 psi oil at an idle, and if i babied it it would get just over 13.

73 f250 4x4
360, np435
4.10's, 33x12.50's
i did a full tune up, although i have a strange way of tuning the carb. replaced pass. side exhaust manifold. I had changed all of the oil (tranny stuff was like thick goopy metallic mud) fixed a hub that didnt like to unlock. and pumped the hell out of the tires.

that was figured 1/2 town(roughly 4 lights) and 1/2 highway at 65. after calculating how much the odometer was being off, and using the same gas pump.

however if i drove it whith a heavy foot and really hammered through the gears, raced it, or played in 4wd, it would only get about 7...

Sounds about right, FE stands for "fuel economy" right? lol

Well, my "360" gets around 20 average and as high as 24 when I kept it under 70 on the freeway. You would have to do one of those "interesting" engine swaps to get there though. Check out the many different oil pans available for the 6bt before you fret too much about steering issues.

oh, gosh. when I read this I thought this guy has to be outta his mind. then, I remembered he got the "360 6cyl" aka 5.9L Cummins.

I wouldn't do a 6BT swap, but would do a 4BT if that's the final decision, as the even with it's recent increase in popularity, the four banger is still cheaper. It's a little more difficult swap a Cummins into a 2wd, as the tie rods go smack dab through the middle of the oil pan and swapping over to a 4wd ahead of the axle steering setup is somewhat of a pain. On your 4wd you simply had to notch the crossmember for clearance, right? That is quite amazing fuel economy when you swap over to an oil burner! Has anyone done the Hercules-White bread truck engine swap into a 2wd? I heard that it can fit in with no interference issues but have no firsthand knowlege. Anybody do an 360FE EFI conversion?

My dad purchased an F-150 4x4 new in 1976 with a 360 and right off the lot he told me he got 5mpg!!! The dealer found a faulty regulator or something and once it was replaced his mileage doubled.
